The author gives a great historical/economic background, but needs to broaden his analysis of post World War II Netherlands. While the Marshall Plan helped industry to rebuild, Amsterdam was made into the legalized drug and prostitution capital of Europe. This had a negative impact on the 60's as industrial output became a cover for drug laundering in cities as far away as the west coast USA.

This book starts out well by making good points criticizing empire and war. It makes a good point about the widespread death and suffering caused by european empire from 1200-1944. However it does not mention the benefits of the European union and the peace and prosperity that it has created in Europe which does the opposite of what this book is saying.

Condition of the book and the timeliness of the delivery were both sharp, but the text seems directed toward a somewhat fatalist look at European Hisorty.
