HolbeinArtists39; Gouache Sample Set of 5 5 ml Tubes

I have used Windsor and Newton gouache and watercolor, typically on Arches hot press watercolor paper, off and on, for years. I regret having spent so much money on WN, because I find the Holbein product to be superior in every way. First, the colors are sumptuous. My set contained carmine and ultramarine deep, lemon yellow, ivory black, and permanent white. They blend beautifully, and are do not muddy easily. The color looks about the same wet when dry, which is a huge advantage over the WN goauche. The colors don't contain any opaquing agent, and do not look chalky when dry. This is what gouache is supposed to be. I find doing the same kind of work is just easier--it is difficult to explain. It is like going from student grade paint to professional paint--and WN is not student grade--but the difference is that pronounced. If you think you like gouache and want to get a serious starter set, this one is fantastic. I liked this set so much that I bought the 15ml tube color mixing set, and two of the 5 color 5ml sets. Money well spent. Costs a bit more, but worth every single penny. I suck at mixing colors usually, but with the color mixing set, everything just works like it is supposed to, according to color theory. I am able to mix realisting skin tones, from very dark to very pale, without wasting a lot of paint. If you are serious about gouache, do yourself a favor and try a sampler set. You are unlikely to regret it.

The media could not be loaded. The Holbein Artist Gouache Sample Set contains Permanent White, Lemon Yellow, Carmine, Ultramarine Deep & Ivory Black. The colour selection is perfect for a Gouache beginner set. A wide variety of colour mixes can be achieved while maintaining vibrancy. The Permanent White in this set layers well, although it's not as crisp as Titanium White.

Good quality, high pigment, co operative paint.

Decent enough gouache paint, but i dont find their opacity straight out of the tube to be any more or less than other professional grade brands. The tubes in this set are only tester size 5ml tubes, and are tiny. But it is enough to inform me that this brand does not live up to the hype and is not worth the price charged. (In the UK that is, i believe these are more affordable in their country of origin which is Japan)
