Thoughtful, Insightful, and Powerful Message for Your Mental Health
I've read most of Chris Hodges' books. I come back to him because, as a Christian, I am drawn to teachers, preachers, and writers grounded in Biblical principles. When I started reading "Out of the Cave," I was a bit taken back. The style was Chris Hodges', but as he began talking about his journey through depression, I wasn't sure if the content applied to me. It didn't take long before I began to see why depression and anxiety are so challenging and commonplace in our current culture. Most people deny they could be in the grips of a mental health challenge. Chris's vulnerability about his journey allows the reader a pathway to honestly assess their situation—past and present.I kept reading because it was quickly evident that the content was not reflecting the author's opinion about depression and mental health. It is a well-researched book. The author wrestled with tough questions, sought out experts, and read meaningful research to take a complex subject and make solutions and insights accessible to all readers.I found it critically important that there are nine root causes of depression, and only two of them require medication. Chris guides the reader to know and understand that even when you are walking with God, you are susceptible to depression. And when we lose our way, God will meet us right where we are when we need Him.This book is a must-read for anyone who desires to understand mental health challenges, discover a pathway to finding their way back into the life God if they are suffering, and stand alongside someone who is struggling.

balanced view
It is difficult to find Christian books on depression that don't just follow the "pray it away" formula. This one is a standout because it does NOT go that direction. As one who has bipolar and depression in the family, the perspective is well needed and practical for walking through the valleys.

The book I wish everyone would read
Chris Hodges does an incredible job of explaining how to view depression. He does not shy away from dealing with the world, the flesh and the devil, unlike so many others who only take a singular view of depression. He writing is concise yet comprehensive. So thankful that the local Celebrate Recovery is starting a study group using this book.
