I am right at 22 inches and 57cm so i am not sure if i should size up or down? because technically both the s/m and the l/xl would fit. which do i get

My measurement is also 22"/57cm. The L/XL helmet fits perfectly using the middle-of-the-road setup of one thicker pad (tagged "L") at front or rear, and a thinner ("XL") opposing pad. It could also accommodate a slightly smaller head of similar shape using 2 "L" pads, or slightly larger one with 2 "XL" pads. My advice is to measure your head very carefully and if in doubt, order up in size. These are non-shrink type crash helmets.

Are the sweat pads washable?

I haven’t washed mine yet, but in the future I will hand wash them. Not sure how they will hold up in the washer.

How much does the padding compress over time? the xs/s fits my kid with the thicker pads, but if the pads pack out it might be too loose.

Neither of mine have compressed at all

How do i know what size to order?

Measure the circumference of your head just above your eyebrows. Below are the size listings. You can also check the manufacturer's website. The helmet has two sets of inserts to create an individualized fit. Size XS/S fits 20 – 21.25 in (51 – 54 cm), S/M fits 21 – 22.5 in (53 – 57 cm), L/XL fits 22.5 – 23.5 in (57 – 60 cm)
