I doubt it would work well on the outside.

Yes, light still filters in. It is waterproof since you put it on the window with water. The material is like a plastic cling but more durable.

Q: Is it possible to cut an opening in the film to provide a small clear area to look out a front entrance door before opening?

Sure. I have seen people cut stripes on the grid in the back and stripe it on the glass to offer some clear spaces. Mine are on sliding glass doors and I LOVE this stuff. It gets super hot here coastal GA/FL border and they help insulate to as well. Many patterns and types I have rainfall. Love this stuff.
