My biggest complaint? The remote doesn't have backlight. Neither does the one for my space heater WHICH you can buy one of these units with heating options. I just haven't taught my fingers on this one yet similar to getting a new tv remote. I have Casement Windows. I didn't WANT casement windows because I knew this problem was going to occur BUT I lost that fight. Ah well. So I got the unit in and didn't have time to configure my window screen for the exhaust tube but it was 98 degrees outside. I stuck the hose out into my hallway landing, turned the ceiling fan on there to move the air down opposite of where I have it in the winter to bring the warm air up, and slept cool all night. It worked so well I contemplated NOT doing the window install. That cost me a little over a hundred dollars in plexiglass and parts though I could do it cheaper. But Free is cheapest. It also had me walking around the unit in the door while asleep SO, I fixed the window. With my window screen adapted, when I use the unit I crank open my window, turn on the air and leave my door cracked. I have a cat that comes in and out but the opening in the door doesn't let much air out, lets the inflow needed for the air that DOES go out through the unit in and gets my bedroom cool in 10-20 minutes tops from too hot. It's as noisy as a window unit but I grew up with that so I go right to sleep. The air in my house is already dried by the HVAC so I have not use Dry mode. There are three modes of control for the Cooling. Temp/Sleep and Timer. Set the Temperature that you want and the unit will cycle on and off to reach and stay at that Temperature. The Sleep setting will raise the temperature 2 degrees in an hour and 4 degrees after 4 hours. (When you fall asleep and are still, you tend to get cold and it tries to account for that.) And Timer, you can have it turn the unit off in 1 hour units up to 24. I've used all three. Last night I left it on. Woke up cold and adjusted temps myself twice. The sleep setting might be about right for me. YMMV I set the timer mode too early the first night and thumbed the unit on again midway through the night THEN woke up cold and turned it off. You'll find your correct setting as well. And NOW people can sleep downstairs without freezing to death so that I can sleep upstairs in comfort, not just tolerable relativity. Should make the electric bills go down to as I don't seem to need the unit on for more then 3 or 4 hours. ---- (the following isn't really review but added to help with Casement Windows Install.)--- Having watched a few YouTube videos the attached photo shows my installation. My real problem with this is I have casement windows. This itself isn't the problem of the unit, it just complicates the install. My windows have screens that clamp to the inside of the window. Simply remove the frame, remove the screen material, buy a piece of plexiglass and trim pieces at your big box store to fit your screen area. You'll have to cut it to size, cut the hole for the exhaust tube and then I used clamps (simple pieces of metal and short, #8 screws to screw them to the frame. Then put the frame back into the window and it's done. I didn't get my trim pieces cut just right and the holes it left in the corner advertised for all those no-seums bugs to crawl right through. I sealed it with white duct tape. When the seasons over I'll fix that. I have seen videos on installing the cutouts they send you on regular windows, they look about like anytime you use a window unit WITHOUT having to have that wonderful time where you slide the unit halfway out and then have someone push the window down to keep it from falling out your whatever story window. It does take a little floor space and is several hundred dollars cheaper then the two hose units that don't take inside air, suck the heat out of it and blow it out the window. That means you are sucking air from somewhere else in your house and bringing that into your room. I let you research those differences, MONEY turned out to be the limiting factor here.

I am a little confused with all the negative reviews saying that this product is not worth it. So far, this product has done wonders for me. Unfortunately, it has not quite been a month yet since purchase, but it has been well worth the money! I understand seeing these negative reviews would turn people away considering the price, so I am going to give my honest feedback. I live in an apartment complex, a townhome, and we are not allowed window units; however, the AC does not reach the entire upstairs very well, and the maintenance team likes to do as little as possible about it. So, we had to invest in one of these, and I can honestly say, I am so thankful I don’t have anymore sweaty nights! The temp goes down to 64 degrees which is super, super comfortable. I do not sleep with it that low, but I love a cold, cold room, so I sleep with it at 68. If my door is open, it will cool most of the upstairs (three bedrooms). I have had some complications with understanding the controls and keeping the AC part running constantly, rather than just the fan. The fan will always be running regardless of the actual unit running, which still does keep it cool, but def not as strong as the actual unit pushing out a repeated cold. It is hard to explain because I am still figuring it out, but ultimately the hard AC does work constantly, and no matter what, it’s always blowing cold air. If you’re worried about the apartment complex not allowing window units, but you really want to be cool, get this. The part the has to go in the window is not big at all, and it actually, from a glance, just looks like you have a window fan, and it sounds like it too. My only complaint with this product is that because the AC part turns off and on to fan mode when it thinks the room is cool enough, it will constantly wake me up in the middle of the night. It will wake me up when it starts to turn on and off because it does sound like an actual AC unit when it turns on, and that got so annoying. That is why I wish I could figure out how to get it running constantly rather than turning off every time it feels like the room is at the temp it needs to be. To address one final complaint, I seen a lot of complaints about the noise. I would say, if you sleep with a fan on, the noise is FINE. I don’t sleep with a fan on anymore because the noise that it makes blowing, makes up for the noise from the fan. As I stated already, it’s just the kicking of it turning on and off that keeps me up. I have found that if I leave my door open when I sleep, it runs most of the night because it is also trying to cool the upstairs, not just my room. As for energy efficient, I will have to come back to this when I get the electric bill for next month- being that I have not had it a whole month yet.

I'll start this review stating, if you CAN get an in-window or two part AC unit, get it. They are FAR better than ANY portable AC unit. A lot of bad reviews here are because people didn't understand portable AC's CANNOT compete with wall or window mount units for cooling efficiency. I'll explain why at the end. But considering the limitations of a portal AC unit, this seems a really nice one for the price. For one its design is tiny and unassuming and should fit any decor. It very much does make cold air, it was easy to set up, and wasn't too horridly heavy to move to my hot-box upstairs office. It absolutely puts out the cold air, even if the thermometer in my room disagrees with its temp setting, its only a degree or two off, and consistent about it, which is good enough. The sound, well its modestly loud. Think 1/2 a vacuum cleaner or...well a heavy "squirrel cage" fan when in active cooling. This does make perfect sense as its has 2 rotary fans and a compressor with ball bearings whirring away inside the box. So its got some volume, so if you were talking you would have to talk mildly loud to talk over it, but doesn't seem to interfere too much with phone calls, or voice chats. Overall it was easy to set up, and the remote is a fantastic addition as I can easily turn it off any time I don't want it running. Now I had to get a "portable" because I have casement fold-out windows. Thus an in-window unit is an impossibility for me, and I'm not about to cut a hole in the wall for an upstairs bedroom that stubbornly is 10 degrees warmer than the rest of the house despite central AC. Thus this is perfect fit, run it when I am in the room, power it off when I am not. I added on one of those casement fabric window seals to provide a half decent seal and it all seems to work well to bring the room in line with the rest of the house. Now your mileage may vary as I DO have central AC so I am supplementing cooling, AND the fact the negative pressure these things make is going to draw COLDER air from the rest of the house helps me here. If this is your only cooling source, know you are not going to get those magical numbers of cooling power printed on the box. It still works, just not quite as nicely as advertised. Also this thing pulls as much wattage as a space heater. All the same advice applies. Only use 12 gauge extension cables rated for 1500 watts, and don't run it off a plug on a light switch. Also note, if you use this with sliding windows, once its installed, measure how much space is between the "back" side of the now open window and the frame, and go get some 1/2 inch hardwood dowels and cut them to that exact size to prevent a bad guy from forcing the now unlocked window open and breaking into your house. If you are like me and have casement windows...umm...I recommend taking the hose out of the window and locking it when you are away. This loses a star because it sounds like it has ball type fan bearings, thus there is a whine to motors. See the overall noise can't really be helped, its inherent to the concept, but the fact its got a whine could have been. Its not bad, and I can ignore it, But I DO hear more than a gentle low hum and the rush of air, so it loses points. It also has those OBNOXIOUS blue LEDs, AND they are always on. Mine is in a work from home office, so is its a non-issue for me, but it would quickly get something tinted taped over it in a bedroom. Also a minor annoyance, but the LCD on the remote isn't one of those aqua-colored light up kinds, so its quite hard to see unless you have the lights on bright. Now I haven't owned it long enough to comment on durability. Honestly given the way of things these days I expect 5-10 years use before it dies. Such is life as they say. And now to the explanation. Portal AC units will NEVER equal the performance of a window unit. See EVERY AC unit every made is a heat-mover, or heat pump to be technical. It moves heat from one place to another. In this case it moves heat by pulling air from the room, over its hot compression-side coil, and out the window using the hose. This makes your room have a lower air pressure than the rest of the house and the outside. Meaning warmer air from places you are not cooling IS going to seep in and fight against the cooling-effect of the AC. This cannot be avoided unless you want to make a vacuum chamber, which I don't advise attempting. Worse, the compressor and condenser fins are inside the room where they are both outside in other types of AC. These also give off heat, lowering your efficiency. Now these kind of AC DO still work the cooling power IS still greater than the hot air pulled in and the extra heat generated by the motors, but you are NOT going to get anything close to the efficacy of a window-unit. Nobody can solve this because the limitation is inherent to having the compressor and condenser inside the room. Hell you will get roughly 1/2 the cooling with a portable, just know this before you buy. But if you are like me and cannot use a window unit, then you have to pick an portable AC, and this really seems like a good buy.

The airconditioning in my apartment is crap. It'll freeze solid in an hour, and then have to be turned off for 2-3 hours to thaw back out again before it'll work again. Apartment maintenance guy's solution: "just don't use it so much." So yeah, instead of frying this summer like I did last summer, I broke down and forked out for this baby. Keeps my 250 sq ft master bedroom nice and cool. It works so well, in fact, that I actually have to turn it off from time to time to let the room warm back up a bit. Haven't tried it in any of the larger rooms of the apartment. Easy to install. Heavy, but not heavy enough that it's hard to move around. Did not come with enough foam sealing tape for the window, but I had a roll lying around to make up the difference. Window is 4 ft tall, and I was about a foot short, so anyone with similarly sized windows may want to grab some foam sealing tape to go with it. It can be a bit loud when it shifts from just blowing air to actively cooling though. It did wake me up in the middle of the night once when it did, but moving it a bit further from the bed helped and it didn't wake me up again the rest of the night. I should have bought one last summer with the air conditioning crapped out.

First off.. i already set my budget thay i will buy a portable A/C in our apartment before summer. since our stock window A/C is installed in the living room of our apartment it's hard for us bring the cold air inside our bedroom and on summer time it feels like you're living inside an oven so this would be the better and only option for us. I wasn't impressed thay they claimed it was 12000 BTU but honestly the 6500 BTU DOE test would be the better description.. cooling our 170 sq ft took some time.. maybe like 10 minutes the fastest. I don't know about the Energy efficiency on this yet.. i might update my review some time when my E.Bill comes in. I'm not 100% satisfied but it would be a pain if i return it since its heavy.. i dont want more trouble but as long as it cools our bedroom in time and I'm not sweating like im a sauna every summer night. Pros -Compact and easy to install -Not that expensive -Came in with window installation kit and insulations Cons -Exhaust tube is a bit short... could have been better if they included at least 8-10ft of exhaust tube -Not putting up much cold in a small Bedroom (170 sq ft) max setting is 64°F -A bit noisy (Not recommended for light sleepers) UPDATE: 06/22/19 So apparently... for 2 weeks of ownership i encountered a problem which some people are having issues with in the reviews. I use my A/C mostly during the nights and for only 3 hours for a lot of times. One morning when i wokeup i saw there is something blinking in the A/C screen and i figured it says "FT" means Full tank... then i quickly grabbed the manual and read how to fix the issue.. and it says that i have to drain the water by unplugging the drain plug behind the unit... then surprisingly it drained probably 2 tablespoon of water... and water is not even coming out without me tilting the unit. but the "FT" still won't go away I called support and the manufacturer and we did troubleshooting but still no luck.. i can't even operate the unit because it says "FT" and it won't go away even after trying to drain it and uplugging the power in and out of wall socket.. I'm guessing the water tank overfill sensor is defective thats why it's happening One time the "FT" is gone without me doing anything... then after a while it says "FT" again and i didn't even used it Amazon sent a new replacement and i will update my review when it comes..

I own two of these, the 12,000 BTU model and the 14,000 BTU model. THE 12,000 BTU MODEL I bought the 12,000 BTU model last year when we were anticipating a summer heat wave, but the heat wave never happened. So I stored it unopened for a year. The heat arrived this summer, so I took it out, put the window venting panel together, and turned it on. I'm using it in my living room, a large open space (about 750 SF) (i.e., it's larger than this unit is rated for). As the temperature climbed outdoors, it started dropping in my living room. It reached 88 degrees outside but was 68 degrees in my living room (so, about 20 degrees lower). Considering the size of the room, I was pleased with how well it worked. The fan has a pleasant white noise sound on this model. Re: problems and issues: One thing I found a little irksome was that the vents the cool air pours out of, aim upward and can't be angled downward (or horizontally) to blow cool air on me when I'm on the couch working. I do most of my work there, so this was a downer. I solved it by propping a piece of lightweight plastic on top of it to angle the air flow toward me. Not ideal but it works. (But they really should fix the vent issue.) The big 'dryer hose' that vents the heat through a widow heats up a bit; this isn't a design flaw, it's how portable AC units work. (They essentially take in air, separate it into hot and cold, then throw the cold air out of the front, and the hot air out of the back.) The fact that the hose heats up reduces their efficiency, causing them to transfer some heat back into the room you're using them in. To minimize this, keep the unit as close to a window as possible so that the hose will be as short as possible. It's not a problem for me yet, but if it becomes one, I may get some kind of insulation to put around it. Other than that, there are no problems so far. HOW TO DRAIN IT Air conditioners collect and create water inside due to the temperature differential and the humidity. If you live in a very humid environment you may need to drain it regularly through the drain spouts in the back. There are two drain spouts; the upper one is to use when you're dehumidifying a room. The lower one is for when you're using it as an AC. Most of the humidity generated by the operation of the compressor goes out through the venting tube, so you may almost never need to drain it. I haven't had to drain mine yet, and it's been about a month. THE 14,000 BTU MODEL After using the 12,000 BTU model and liking it, I bought the 14,000 BTU model. I have a large living room so I wanted to be able to run both at once on really hot days (i.e., over 100 degrees F outside). I had to use a different circuit for the new one, so bought a heavy duty extension cord, making sure it was rated to handle the extra power. I like both units, but the 14,000 BTU model makes little sounds… kind of a subtle scraping sound… when it’s in operation that I don’t like all that much. It feels to like the air temperature is the same coming from both of them. I'm not sure it was worth the extra money for just another 2,000 BTU (really just another 1,000 BTU when you consider the heat loss that all internal AC units have.) WHY THE BAD REVIEWS? Portable AC units, this one included, get lots of bad reviews. Some may be because people don't know how to use them (i.e., they may not have waited 24-36 hours after delivery to turn it on). (This is because the delivery company may have had the unit on its side.) Apart from that, though, I suspect that some defective models are sent out, and people try to "work with the company" to fix them, instead of returning them. If I got one that had problems, I would immediately return it, especially because Black and Decker's tech support line is so terrible. (I had a couple of minor issues I was trying to resolve when I first set mine up; it took me three days to connect with a live person, then I had to call back again because the advice was wrong... which took another two days. I'd call, be put on hold for a half hour, then the call would disconnect.) I gave this product 5 stars but my rating of Black and Decker's tech support would be one star.

In the middle of this summer on the hottest day of the year, my central HVAC died on me. Being that it was in the middle of the summer, I couldn’t get an HVAC technician in for weeks I have an 8 1/2 year-old French bulldog and it is so important that she stays cool So I hopped on Amazon and purchased the Black & Decker portable air conditioner 12,000 BTU and I am so happy that I did!!! It took several months for my HVAC to get fixed I was able to keep my bedroom hallway and both bathrooms, nice and cold with this Black & Decker portable air conditioner I had no problem, setting it up myself I attached the hose and used the window kit that came with it, and was up and running in five minutes. It took very little time for my rather large master bedroom to come down and temperature from 90° to 68. This portable AC was my savior for the rest of the summer! It’s a work horse. It ran for days on end without issue. I love that it was portable. I was able to get an extender for the hose and roll this into my hallway so I was able to cool off my home office on days that I was working from home. Then those evenings, I would just roll it back into the bedroom. If someone hasn’t given me another standup air conditioner I would’ve purchased a second one of these for my living room and dining room area. The only thing I wish they would change the remote control It needs to be backlit. But other than that, it’s a very convenient feature that I really appreciated having It’s nice to be able to control the temperature of this machine without having to get up and go over to it, especially in the middle of the workday The airflow was very strong and it was adjustable. I was able to adjust the angle of the flow quite easily. I’ve never used a product like this before, so I wasn’t sure what to expect but this definitely exceeded my expectations. My HVAC is now fixed, but we are definitely keeping this close. Our HVAC is an older system and our master bedroom doesn’t cool off so well with it so next summer we’re going to be setting this up in our master bedroom for added cooling. This machine ran for two months straight without ever turning it off. We experienced nothing but great cold air from it. Thank you, Black & Decker for making such a great product and keeping my family cool during one of the hottest summers we’ve ever had!! Such a great product. Easy to set up, seems to be very durable, and it didn’t take up a ton of space If you are looking for a great AC system that will cool off larger areas of your home. I highly recommend this Black & Decker portable air conditioner.

I bought this in June 2019 and I live in Florida, so this this was a necessity in my room which had poor airflow from the central unit, and I have a computer in here so it's basically a space heater. I'll start with the good things: It works. I put it to a temperature, and it attempts to bring it down to that temperature. It has that "mist technology" so the drain rarely needs to be drained. I have only drained it once, and barely anything came out. The remote is basic, but works fine and gets the job done. It has 3 modes: Cool, Dehum, and Fan. It has fan speed adjustments that can only be changed in Cool and Fan modes, along with a timer and sleep option, along with a fan swing and C/F button. The unit itself has similar capacitive buttons on the top of it next to its screen. Some people won't like the noise, but I love it. I can't sleep in a silent room, so a droning AC unit is nice. It's not particularly loud, but not quiet either. Now for the negatives: The setup is an absolute nightmare. I have a vertical window, and the instructions say the exhaust is designed for both vertical and horizontal windows. The included "slider" kit is very large, with all 3 pieces attached, it probably reaches about 5 feet. They include some foam that they claim is enough to cover all of the edges when installing the exhaust, however, they only put in about a foot of this foam. Barely enough to cover the top and bottom, nowhere near enough to cover the sides. With only foam on the top and bottom, there are a TON of gaps for air to pull in from outside, and I was forced to duct tape all of the edges to make sure no air leaks out. Even the quick-attach of the exhaust tube has gaps in it for air to escape. The exhaust design is absolutely dreadful. The screen on this thing is so bright, and there is no way to turn it off or dim it. I had to put a sock over it to block the light. As someone who likes a very pitch black room to sleep in, it seriously stands out and looks like a blue flashlight lighting up the room. Some people might like the night light, I suppose. Not me. There is no way to have the fan off when the compressor is not in operation. When the unit is on, the fan is on. I would've loved a setting to have the fan turn off when the compressor turns off, so that when working in the room, you only have to deal with loud noise when the room needs to be cooled. There is an "auto" setting, that turns the fan down to the lowest setting when the compressor is off, and then turns it to high when it turns on, but I still would love the fan to just be off when the compressor is off. The temperature adjustment for the Cool mode is more of a suggestion than anything. I have a thermometer next to my desk and I can see what temp it is in my room. Sometimes if I set it to 74(F) degrees, it will not turn the AC on until it is 80 in the room. Sometimes it will be on too much and cool it to 70 and below. It rarely attempts to keep it around the temperature you set. This is my biggest issue with the unit, as I can't afford to have it running 24/7, but I would like it to actually keep the room cool. The Dehumidifier mode has no temperature selection, and just has the compressor on the entire time. This is incredibly odd to me. I haven't used this feature much if at all because it just constantly cools the room to whatever temperature it wants. All in all, I'm kind of half and half on this. I would never buy another one, and would never recommend this exact one to anyone else. But, it keeps my room cool (most of the time) and that is it's entire purpose at the end of the day. I just wish the setup and the temperature selection weren't so awful.

Excelente, enfria como un minisplit, es para habitaciones pequeñas, ojo, se necesitan leer instrucciones, y algunos complementos para que el aire funcione de manera optima. Es ruidoso tal como un ventilador en nivel maximo. Tiene un modo de sleep que hace menos ruido y el control tiene un termostato que enciende y apaga el aire al llegar a la temperatura deseada o pueden descargar la app al celular y desde ahi gestionarlo. Donde yo vivo es ideal, porque el calor llega a 36 grados, y en la noche cae a 24, solo son 6 semanas de calor intenso. Yo solo lo uso en la noche para enfriar en lapsos de 12am a 4 am, con eso basta para dejar fresca la habitacion. Yo lo compre en enero porque estaba súper barato me salió regalado. Lo recomiendo la verdad se diferencia mucho un ventilador a un minisplit es muy agradable dormir cuando el clima es templado

A/C with USA plug. We used 2 adapters and they are burned immideately. So its unuseful. What to do?
