Girl Group Sound Collectors Will Want This
At Messick High School in Memphis, students Sandra Jackson, Kay Evans and Judy Williams began singing at school and other local events in the late 1960s, eventually winning a 1967 talent contest for which the big prize was an audition with the Memphis-based Stax Records, first launched in 1957 as Satellite Records by Estelle Axton and her brother Jim Stewart (the name change had come in 1961 to avoid confusion with an L.A.-based label called Satellite, using a combination of their surnames).Inspired by the genre that, with its tentative beginnings in 1954/55 (Shirley Gunter & "The Queens" and The Hearts), would morph into what became known as the "Girl Group Sound" (The Cookies in 1956 - eventually to evolve into Ray Charles back-up group The Raeletts - The Shepherd Sisters in 1957, The Chantels and Shirelles in 1958, The Marvelettes, Crystals, Angels, and The Paris Sisters in 1961, The Supremes in 1962, Martha & The Vandellas, The Ronettes and Chiffons in 1963, and The Shangri-Las, Dixie Cups and Velvelettes in 1964), the girls were deemed good enough to get a contract with the Stax subsidiary Hip Records, where they would record as The Goodees.Unfortunately, they were trying to re-invent an era that had pretty much run its course almost two years previous to their debut, and right in the midst of the rise of the "psychedelic pop" period. Consequently, their initial effort - For A Little While/Would You, Could You on Hip 109 - went nowhere in 1968. The A-side, written and produced by Isaac Hayes and David Porter, is perhaps unique in one respect in that it featured backing by The Bar-Kays, among their final efforts before dying in the same December 1967 plane crash that also took the life of Otis Redding. However, leaning heavily on an earlier Girl Group smash, Leader of The Pack by The Shangri-Las, and with the production of Fred Briggs and Don Davis, they did see their follow-up release, Condition Red - now regarded as a classic biker-death disc - make it to a modest # 46 Billboard Pop Hot 100 in 1969 b/w Didn't Know Love Was So Good on Hip 8005. But that would be it, as neither of Jilted (a long track in excess of 5 minutes about a teenage pregnancy)/Love Is Here (Hip 8010), nor Goodies (written and produced by Spooner Oldham and Dan Penn)/He's A Rebel (Hip 8016) made any impact. The one hit did, however, lead to their only LP, Candy Coated Goodees, which contained these tracks: Condition Red, Sad Song For Harry, A Little Bit Of You, Double Shot, Worst That Could Happen, Girl Crazy, Jilted, Didn't Know Love Was So Good, My Boyfriend's Back, Promises, He's A Rebel. Here Ace goes all out - as they usually do - to bring you all their Hip efforts, including 7 previously unreleased sides, making it an invaluable addition to any Girl Group collection, complete with their trademark immaculate sound and a multi-page detailed insert (with vintage photos and poster reproductions), based largely on an interview with Sandra Jackson (now Hall).
