120Hz with M1 Pro Mac - great customer service!
Bought this specifically to get 120Hz out of my M1 Pro Macbook Pro as I had moved to a LG C3 42 inch TV as a monitor. Asked to confirm this was the right one (it was) and they sent the instructions for how to apply and update. All done, and it worked straight away with my Sony TV (as a test). However when I got my C3, I could only get 30Hz out of it (using a known good cable that handled 120Hz directly on the PC straight off the bat and would do 60 Hz straight from the Macbook). Contacted Cable Matters and within the day I received a brand new firmware update which worked and I got 120Hz with the LG C3. They even confirmed that it would work with the latest update of Sonoma. Note: You will need a USB-C or Thunderbolt connection which supports DP Alt mode so don't get disheartened if it doesn't work after the update. A great product backed by fantastic customer service from Cable Matters (all responses were within the day). Special shout out to Grace from Cable Matters who was brilliant!

Best accessory I've purchased for Macbook Pro - 4K 120hz on M1 Pro Macbook
Purchased this so that I could use my M1(Pro) Macbook Pro with a 120hz 4K Monitor over HDMI. This isn't supported by default and when you plug in to the integrated HDMI port, you are limited to 60hz. Delighted that when I received this adapter, 120hz 4K over HDMI was supported by default - I didn't even need to update the firmware as some online forums suggested. I guess these newer built devices are shipping with the newer firmware by default. Couldn't be happier. No longer need to manually switch Displayport on my monitor!

EDIT: Now works fine after OK tech support.
EDIT: After some tech support was able to point me in the direction of a firmware update, I was able to get the device working at the desired resolution and refresh rate. The device had problems with Intel Gen 11 and an update to the firmware resolved the issue. However, if you try to find the device with the model number (201388) on their website, you will not be able to find it. Instead, you will have to look in the 'Knowledge Base' portion of their website and find the VMM6100 firmware update. This relates to the chipset. If you google, 'Cable Matters 201388 Chipset', you'll see VMM7100 chipset, which is incorrect. This is an utter mess! But was at least able to resolve the issue in the end! OLD REVIEW: *Could never get anymore than 1080p out of this* Only getting 1080p@60hz with this converter. I have the correct HDMI cable (works @ 8k60) and Thunderbolt 4 connection. In the end I had to buy another cable, USB-C to DisplayPort and now I am getting my desired resolution (2k@165hz).

One cable solution with 4k 120Hz support on M1 Pro Mac (with firmware update)
Disclaimer: 4k 120Hz is not supported out of the box, it will require manual tweaking The process of enabling it is straight forward and requires less than 5 minutes of work. You will require a Windows machine with a thunderbolt3/4 port or DP over USBC capabilities. The firmware and instructions are found online after searching: DP/USB-C/Thunderbolt 3/4 to HDMI 2.1 4k@120hz RGB4:4:4 10b HDR with Apple Silicon M1/M2/M3 now possible ! The Cable Matters USB-C to HDMI 2.1 solved all my issues. I've long wanted to embrace the one cable life with my Macbook but always had to compromise. All docks I've come across are limited to 4k 60Hz when connected to Macs just like the HDMI port on the device itself. This adapter was outstanding and singlehandedly resolved my issue. Using the firmware update tools and an older firmware version I was able to utilize the Thunderbolt 4 ports on my dock and display 4K 120Hz HDR to my TV. If you're planning to replicate this, for the smoothest experience ensure the adapter is the 201388-A model and you're using a certified HDMI 2.1 cable. The build quality on the adapter is great. The aluminium shell dissipates the heat from the chip inside the adapter and allows it to run significantly cooler than other products I tried. I was so happy with this adapter that I ordered another one straight away. I recommend this adapter to everyone.

4k @120hz with MacBook Pro M1
Works great out of the box with my MacBook Pro M1 and LG C3. No more 30hz! Full 4k @120hz.

Quality build and works right out of the box
My laptop has HDMI 2.1 and a GPU that is capable of outputting 4k 120hz HDR but, for some reason, the HDMI won't output 120hz. I bought this adaptor to use the USB-C display port and convert to HDMI and this works perfectly. I saw some reviews about having to update the firmware before it will work correctly but this doesn't seem to be the case anymore. If you're in the same situation as I was then this will absolutely solve it with no messing around, it's literally plug and play.

After a lot of tinkering, it actually works
I tried plugging this in to my ThinkPad with i7-1165G7 CPU and only got 4K60Hz at first. Cable Matters has a firmware update tool, but my ThinkPad couldn't read the IC of the adapter's chip for some reason. After trying it on my Asus 14X i5-11357 (which also defaulted to 4K60Hz), I was able to get the Asus to read the IC of the adapter and flash the update successfully. After also updating the Intel Xe Graphics drivers on both machines, I was able to get 4K 120Hz HDR to output from both machines (albeit at 10-bit 4:4:4 on the Asus 14X and only 8-bit 4:2:0 on the ThinkPad) Regardless, it's the first (and only) such adapter I've found that can accomplish this feat, and I'm very happy with paying the slight premium for something that works perfectly (after some growing pains). Would strongly recommend - with caveats noted (you must be somewhat comfortable with tech upgrades/flashing firmware)
