I have long been fascinated with pioneers, particularly pioneer women, and wanted a book that would tell the stories of these strong women. I got that and more when I purchased this book. The accounts here go back 150+ years and detail the hardships, struggles and wins these women had. They endured things that I never dreamed of - some of them lost their husbands, some lost a child (or several), and some did backbreaking work every day and had to really work to get everyday conveniences that we take for granted these days...like water, for example.It took me just a couple of days to read this book. Each time I picked it up, I was completely immersed in the stories here, as well as the real photos. Some of the women looked downright miserable in the photos but others looked like they were really happy. There is a lot of good history here - things that I either didn't pay attention to in History class in high school or things we just weren't taught.This is a great, fairly easy read. I found myself saying "wow!" several times while reading this book....mostly because I probably could not have endured even a fraction of what they endured...but also because there were tons of things that happened that I had no clue about. They had SO much more to deal with other than just setting up a house and harvesting the land. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in women pioneers and American history. If I had a daughter, I would definitely ask her to read this book.
