The Domestic Revolution

Kitchen sink history
Very well researched and referenced and written in a style that is easily accessible i.e. you don't need to be a historian or an academic to follow the central arguments. Fascinating on cooking/kitchens in particular, it has some decent recipes. It is history seen through the eyes of ordinary folk, servants etc but doesn't omit the contribution of the wealthy. Strong focus on what women did and that's no bad thing. Definitely recommended if you are at all interested in the development of society.

Unsuspected Consequences of Coal Fires
This was a fascinating book. The history of English cooking and cleaning completely diverged from the continent because of coal. Still affects us today. Ruth Goodman always an interesting read.

Does What It Says On The Tin
Great coverage of the historical events and developments. Nice illustrations. Not riveting stuff though!

Ruth Goodman is a superb guide. Thoroughly enjoyable, informative and almost like she is talking directly to you. Anyone interested in this period of transition could have no better read.
