Broke
Purchased after seeing the good reviews. Received the product today and it looked promising. Unfortunately, before I could even finish installing/ adjusting the Derailleur the plastic cable pulley/arm snapped off of the main body.

So... You like a challenge..
Bought a new 34t low gear freewheel and quickly found out that my current derailleur wasn't up to the task. Decided on this due to price and the Shimano brand. If you're a weekend bike mechanic you may wish to look elsewhere unless you like a challenge. Because this derailleur doesn't come with set up instructions. So I originally had shortened the cable housing to be a straight shot to the derailleur. Because I needed more cable slack to run through the derailleurs cable path. But because of the pulley system that this one uses I found out fast it need to be an arc or a "C" shape for this to function right. In the first picture if you follow the cable from it's end you can make out the "C" shape I mentioned. Once I figured this out the rest was easy, just tuning. But this figuring took a half an hour. And as I stated before the instructions where no help. Just a product description. Getting the chain to make the 34T jump took a little doing but after some trial and error. I was able to get this working. I however run my own bike business. So this isn't my first setup of a new derailleur. It was my first of this type. That being said. Altogether install and tuning took me just under an hour. My advice is do the "C" shape with the housing. And pay close attention to the cable path through the derailleur. It's a tricky one. I gave this 4 stars simply because of the lack of instructions. I would have had this done in 15 minutes had there been an explanation of the products operation. Going to put some abusive miles on this set up today to see how it holds up. I'll let you know if there's an issue.

Will twist and go off alignment real easy. Ghost shifting.... No mattter what you do!
You pay for what you get. NG. Ate 2 of these already. The Jockey cage and jockey wheels will distort under normal chain tension. Very sloppy mechanism. Poorly built. Not worth it at any price. Just a headache. Do not buy!! You will go crazy trying to adjust poor shifting!!!! It will always drop a Gear under load or not shift at all, no matter how well you understand setup and bicycles. Don't waste your money or time on this one.Have many deraillers high and low end stuff. This is just pure Shimano garbage. Yes Shimano does make "non series" garbage. Don't let the Shimano name here fool you! Be warned.

Perfect
I love this derailleur! The pulley not only pivots but the arm the cable goes into has rotation built it. This is a nice touch and it help protect the cable/housing from *some* of the vibrations/ joseling that come from biking on imperfect surfaces. It also hold the cable housing at an angle (90-ish to the ground) that I'm assuming puts less strain on the housing. The limit and housing screws are easy to use. Very good purchase. I used this to convert an old 10 speed to a 21 speed.

Shimano quality & Good value for the price
Shimano quality & Good value for the price.I have used several of these rear derailleur’s on refurbished vintage bikes with no complaints.Note: There are some knockoff or low quality Shimano derailleurs out there lately, but this one seems to be a true Shimano.

If switching from RD-TY300 to this TY500......
If switching from RD-TY300 to this TY500 you will need to cut 2 3/4" off your cable housing to expose more cable to run over the pulley, through the cable guide to the cabledog (I only cut 2 1/4" off and it's tail is only about 5/8" long, almost too short to work with) make sure you dont cut the cable... just the housing.... but you know this already... just reminding ya.

Didn't last long
I snapped my rear mech after having my Giant hardtail about 7 rides. Bought this replacement and 4 rides later, it just snapped again. Gave that bike to a friend and he is going to upgrade components. This is not a great rear mech at all....

EASY TO INSTALL BUT I GUESS TIME WILL TELL WITH THIS ONE!
This one comes with bigger cogs or sprockets which ever you wanna call them and they are not made like the one i had before, which is good, They were made of some kind of hard rubber or something,So far i like them and as time goes on i Guess i will see if they stay working well as long as i take care of them, But the part that cable goes through and is connected to the barrel is made of plastic so if you have to index it a lot to get the right setting there is a possibility it will break, like it did to one guy who give his comment. I'm just sayin

Poca spesa tanta resa

Quattro euro risparmiati.
