Garcinia Cambogia is a palm-sized citrus fruit from the Garcinia evergreen family that is commonly found in India and distributed throughout Polynesia, Africa and Asia. The Garcinia rinds are rich in hydroxycitric acid, or HCA, a potent derivative of citric acid that has been consumed for years for various purposes. These rinds are frequently used in Asian-style cooking. Often, sun-dried rinds are used in healthful syrups as a means of treating digestive ailments or pains. Or, the rinds are used for flavor purposes, such as introducing acidic notes into curries. Many laboratory and clinical studies have shown HCA inhibits the conversion of carbohydrates to fatty acids. Research shows that HCA is a potential metabolic regulator of weight gain and lipogenesis (fat generation). For these reasons HCA is heralded (for example, Dr. Oz regards Garcinia as a 'Holy Grail' for weight loss) as a potential instrument in lifestyle management of weight and overall wellness. In particular, HCA has been used by the medical community as a safe and effective pharmacological intervention for more than 30 years!
