Q: What is the inside diameter of the optical barrel, and what are the lenses made of?

When I received it, I took it apart. The structure is a male and female thread that screw together inside the door. The outside of the female shaft is 1.10" or about 28mm (the minimum diameter hole you will need through the door). The inside of the optical barrel measures 0.675" or 17.1 mm. The lenses are indeed glass unlike most cheap peephole viewers.

Q: From how far away can you see through the viewer?

I think the questioner might have meant how far back from the peephole can you stand and still see outside. You can stand maybe a foot away and still see clearly although you can see better if you get a little closer, maybe 6-8 inches.

Q: How large of a hole will this work with? I have an exiting 2.5" hole but thinking with a washer I could make this work.

hi it needs a 1 1/8" hole it will cover a bit more but 2.5 is alot

Q: What size hole to drill for this item?

The hole diameter is: 28mm, and applicable door thickness is: 40mm~55mm.
