Since You Went Away (Children of the Promise)

I’ve this series before and I’m as emotional now as I was then. Love the book and the Thomas Family!

I love the books! They put me in history through a fictional family. I have learned more of what it could have been like this way. This particular book covers much of the events that occurred during the early days of WWII. My father-in-law is a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor and was a surgeon that took the first casualties from there and his wife kept a detailed journal. I also just returned from Normandy, France and the chapter where the invasions for D-Day takes place gives me more perspective from the soldier's view. I met several survivors while at the 75th anniversary, but the storyline in the book gives details of how they carried their packs and feelings most don't want to talk about. I highly recommend this series of books!

Couldn't put it down! Finished the 1st volume and immediately had to get the next. So glad I discovered Dean Hughes!

The entire series is excellent. Even our children enjoyed listening as we traveled in the car, and shushed each other to keep from missing anything--and it is an adult theme! Tom Hughes is the best narrator we have listened to in all the stories we have played in our days of travel with 5 children. He uses his own voice, but with different inflections for different characters--you always know who is speaking, even though he does not try to create false, hokey immitations of children or women's voices.I am now playing this in a carpool of high schoolers--and they cannot wait to get into the car and start the story to listen on the way to school.

I really loved this book and the series. It really draws the reader in and helps the reader feel they are there experiencing everything along side the characters.

I just finished this second book while pulled over at a Shell gas station because I could not wait any longer to read the last pages. Now I will rush to the grocery store and home so I can get the next book downloaded. I know these characters and feel their pain and joy. It's unlike other books. Brilliant.

This was purchased as a replacement copy for my husband. He has read the series so many times his copy was falling apart. I have since read the series and can say it was really good. Even though this is historical fiction I learned a lot about WWII that I didn't know before. You can't help but feel attached to the characters and feel a part of them. Great series.

Bought this for my hubby who is not a reader. So far, he has read each one non-stop. He loves it, I'm glad I bought it for him. He enjoys reading real-life stories, and this series is dated in his era of growing up.

Great book mixing history with a fictional family. A great historical writer. I learned a lot about WW2 that I didn't know and really got interested in the family members.
