The scanner is ok, it is now in reality old tech but there are precious few items out there that have some of the features that this is meant to deliver. It scans 35mm negatives and transparencies (Mounted Slides), the Plustek 8200i item seems well enough manufactured though I do wonder if it may be susceptible to dust internally with use. I want to manage both so the only choice is to go for the AI version with the IT8 Calibration slide included. Knowing my luck SilverFast 8 which was issued in 2012 will be supersceded making the as now (2020) new purchase obsolete in no time.Install and setup raised no real issues on Windows 10 Pro 64 bit.The scanner price is largely made up by the SilverFast software from LaserSoft in Germany. Addons or upgrades, if you find you need them (so think before you buy), from LaserSoft are disgracefully expensive for what they are and the complete lack of any worthwhile manual except an additional ebook item purchase from LaserSoft is a disgrace.The user Book (its not claimed to be a manual by Lasersoft) is a PDF purchasable from LaserSoft for C. 30 Euros currently is barely adequate. Sure its 380 pages long but its layout and lack of proper setout contents and index are grave shortcomings as is the fact that printing it doesn't get useful images when these are supposed to demonstrate functions. If you thought you may get a knowledgebase and chat forum for user interaction, then think again, the SilverFast forum has no visible posts since 2018 even their Facebook is posts (not great if You don't like or trust Facebook) are useless, again you are on your own! Many other purchasers will simply direct users to other software probably driven to do so because of the poor online customer service Lasersoft provide for what is potentially a very capable product. Overall, this messy product only goes to make getting to grips with scanner even more problematic and in many ways devalues the actual scanner significantly.Half the features shown on the website for the software are NOT included, indeed the HDR features (as they use the term HDR, which is not the normal Photo HDR technique) is an additional £90 as an upgrade to the Ai Studio Package if you want their Archiving features (keeps all scan detail for future reprocessing without having to rescan again). Terms they use are not defined and you'll feel like a lost soul struggling with really crude webpages full of bitty rubbish video/pdf clips trying to find anything of help from the SilverFast website. To do anything worthwhile its an absolute muddle of finding the best scan you can get and then using Photoshop or Lightroom to fix the final image. SilverFast documentation does NOTHING to help you do this.As an update: some weeks after purchase. I can affirm that using the Ai Studio software without the HDR addon is all but pointless as scanning takes so long that if you want to retain original scans for reprocessing then the HDR addon is the only way to apply any of teh features like dust removal or any other real edits. It adds a virtual light table and allows you to create Jobs in Job Manager to batch process your original scans.I will say that Lasersoft do reply to support requests form the application help menu, that said they are dogmatic, completely unhelpful and frankly have no customer care repeatedly directing you to the pdf and video files you've already read/viewed that don't cover the detail. They want you to buy 1:1 training, which based on their support replies I'd say you'd be really disappointed with so I can't recommend.I now scan to 64bit HDRi, ignore all the garbage about formats etc. but scan to the optical limit of teh scanner then process basics in the HDR addon package and then pass the rest of any work on to a package which has better support. Its an expensive route but as the HDR addon I'm told will work stand alone I can keep the original HDRi scans (in case) and reprocess at will.The Amazon Shop that provided my purchase (CCL) thought it ok to dispatch the scanner in its manufacturers retail box, no extra protection, poorly labelled and not even sealed. The packaging looked slightly second hand when it arrived. I hope it will deliver enough for the price I paid.I would not recommend one of these unless you are prepared to spend a lot of time learning the software and then don’t expect to spend less than 10 mins per frame to tweak settings (even if you have the AI version NegaFix library) if you want respectable results. Slide scan results seem to be even worse than Negatives and colour balance tuning even with the additional ebook is less than great.

Es gibt Gerüchte über manipulierte Rezensionen - deshalb meine Vorbemerkung: mich hat niemand beauftragt, eine positive Bewertung zu schreiben! - Ende des Vorwortes - nun zum Artikel:Es handelt sich hier um ein großartiges Gerät mit sehr umfangreicher und hochwertiger Software. Leider sind einige Beschreibungen etwas irritierend. Das ist z.B.:1. Da die Entwicklung des Gerätes und der Software sicher schon vor einigen Jahren erfolgte, fehlt an mehreren Stellen bei den technischen Voraussetzungen der Hinweis auf WIN 10. Da weiß man nun nicht genau, ob man den Scanner unter WIN 10 nicht verwenden kann oder ob das einfach nur fehlt, weil es das vor einigen Jahren noch nicht gab (es gibt ja tatsächlich ältere Programme, die unter WIN 10 nicht laufen...).2. In der beiliegenden (dürftigen) Anleitung wird darauf hingewiesen, dass man erst die Scanner-Software installieren muss, danach dann SilverFast. Das habe ich dann (auf einem WIN10-Rechner) so gemacht. Doch nach dem Installieren der Scanner-Software erscheint das entsprechende Symbol - wie in der Anleitung beschrieben - nicht in der Taskleiste. So habe ich einfach versucht, im erzeugten Programmordner die *.exe-Datei mal anzuklicken - doch dabei passiert nichts. Dann habe ich festgestellt, dass es unter WIN10 ein kleines Symbol unten in der Leiste gibt - ein Dreieck oder wie ein Pfeil nach oben - wenn man dort drauf klickt, erscheinen einige andere Symbole und u.a. auch das Scanner-Symbol! Also hat die Installation doch funktioniert. Nun habe ich also SilveFast AI Studio 8 installiert. Wenn ich nun den Scanner anschließe, funktioniert alles ohne Probleme. Vor dem Scannen kann man nun einfach durch Druck auf die entsprechende Taste am Scanner auswählen, welches Programm man verwenden möchte - für einen schnellen Scan "QuickScan" (das Programm von Plustek) oder durch Drücken der Taste "IntelliScan" das Programm SilverFast AI Studio 8 für einen hochwertigen Scan.Nun habe ich auf einem älteren XP-Rechner nur die ScannerSoftware (ohne SilverFast) installiert. Die Funktion Quickscan ist hier problemlos möglich. Allerdings kommt nach dem Start des Rechners jedesmal die Meldung, dass SilverFast nicht installiert ist.Ich verstehe nicht, was manche Käufer an diesem Programm auszusetzen haben. Einige schreiben, dass sie zum Scannen ein anderes Programm verwenden. Warum kauft man dann einen Scanner mit dieser teuren Software, wenn man sie doch nicht benutzt? Allein das Programm kostet 299 EURO - bleiben also für den Scanner (incl. Scanner-Software) noch ca. 100 EURO. Das haben einige nicht bedacht, die mit dem Scan-Ergebnis nicht zufrieden sind!Eines muss doch dem Nutzer klar sein: ein sehr schnelles Scannen und zugleich hohe Qualität - das geht nicht! Und in ein umfangreiches Programm muss man sich immer erst etwas einarbeiten - das ist auch nicht neu. Wer also so vorgehen möchte: Scanner kaufen, auspacken, anschließen und schnell mal 1 000 Dias scannen - der sollte sich für ein billigeres Gerät (30-80 EURO) entschließen und muss dann aber mit einer schlechten Bildqualität zufrieden sein. - Übrigens: die „billigen“ Scanner „scannen“ ja eigentlich gar nicht, sie fotografieren. Das geht natürlich schneller, als ein „richtiges“ Scannen. So einen Scanner hatte ich auch mal - ja, das geht wesentlich schneller, aber das Ergebnis ist grässlich und es ist auch kaum etwas vorher einzustellen.Man muss bei der Arbeit mit diesem Gerät einen Kompromiss eingehen: will ich höchste Qualität, muss ich mich damit abfinden, dass alles ziemlich lange dauert. Man sollte in der Anwendung also unterscheiden zwischen:A r c h i v i e r e n (Dias oder Negative in hoher Qualität digitalisieren) undK a t a l o g i s i e r e n (eine große Anzahl nur zum Zwecke der Übersicht in einer Datenbank, z.B. ein Album, zu speichern).Vorschlag: zur „Sichtung“ der Bestände QuickScan verwenden, dann nur die unbedingt notwendigen Bilder für das Scannen mit IntelliScan (SilverFast Studio 8) auswählen. Diese Bilder dann im *.tif-Format speichern. Bei einem Scan in 64Bit-HDRi können Dateien von 100 bis 500 MB entstehen!!! Es gibt allerdings nur wenige Grafikprogramme, die mit tif etwas anfangen können. Sicher wäre hierfür das Programm SilverFast HDR 8.8 (249 EURO) oder HDR Studio 8.8 (399 EURO) sinnvoll. Ich habe diese aber auch nicht. Das Besondere am tif-Format: hier werden nicht nur die Bildinhalte gespeichert, sondern diverse Parameter, die nun nachträglich ohne erneutes Scannen bearbeitet werden können. Genannt „Scanner-Rohdaten“. Das ist neu, denn bisher wurden Veränderungen erst durch erneutes Scannen wirksam.Wer keine Möglichkeit hat, tif-Dateien weiter zu verwenden, sollte im jpeg-Format (*.jpg) speichern. Dann aber nicht in 64Bit-HDRi scannen, das hat keinen Sinn, wenn man es doch nicht weiter bearbeiten kann.Es sollte jedem klar sein: wir befinden uns hier im mittleren Preissegment. Es gib Scanner für 29 EURO und auch für 5 000 oder 7 000 EURO!!! (z.B. Nicon Super Coolscan 5000 ED oder 9000 mit SilveFast Archiv Suite bei ScanDig für 7.099 EURO!).Es ist für jeden Interessenten ratsam, sich vor dem Kauf auch auf der Homepage über die SilverFast -Produkte zu informieren und die entsprechenden PDF-Dateien herunterzuladen.Eines ist mir allerdings nicht klar - oder habe ich ein wichtiges historisches Ereignis verschlafen? Ist Deutschland inzwischen die nordwestliche chinesische Provinz? Für beide Artikel findet man deutsche Adressen - für den Scanner (Plustek) in Ahrensburg und für SilverFast (LaserSoft Imaging AG) in Kiel - aber auf beiden Produkten findet man den Hinweis „Made in China“ - toll!

This scanner produces excellent results and is fairly fast, much easier/better than a flatbed in my experience.The included Silverfast software is very good and allows various processing steps to be added to get the results you want as well as a very wide range of scanning resolution and speed. The negative holders are a bit fiddly to get the film strips aligned but with a little practise work very well.The scanner can generate images at 150 to 7200 dpi in various formats ranging from 1 bit black and white to 64 bit HDRi with lots of options in between - the higher resolution scans taking considerably longer but still fairly rapid.I've only experimented with general archiving so far with a fairly low resolution of 1800 dpi JPEG format but it gets through the strips at a fair clip. Enabling the scratch detection and removal is surprisingly good straight out of the box but does double the scan/process time so I'm only using that if I need to.One cautionary note - the included software does not run under Mac BigSur - I went ahead and upgraded the software to version 9 which does run but obviously at a cost. I've not tried the Windows version.

The unit works well. The following comments really relate mainly to using the unit with the SilverFast software. You need to pay extra to get some reasonable instructions for the SilverFast software, the web access instructions are pretty scant and only really usable if you have some good technical knowledge. The scanning does take time especially if you are using all the bells and whistles such as dust and scratch elimination and dynamic range enhancement etc. It can take as long as 5 minute for a 35 mm slide. I spent a week digitising 500 odd slides and found the best way was to scan them all at a quick and basic setting and reserve fine-tuning for those slides I particularly wanted.An indication of the nature of the SilverFast software is that in the manual - Scanning Workflows .... by Mark Segal there is a discussion of which is quicker to adjust images - doing it thru SilverFast or doing it thru Photoshop. I use both and can only say that they both require a fair amount of knowledge possibly more than I possess.My own conclusion is that it can produce excellent results but there is a hefty learning curve and the level of control is similar to Photoshop. I am unable to compare to to whatever completion there is out there whether the film scanner or the software. But I do not regret buying it and have been happy with he results.

Okay, it's not cheap, but can be justified (to the wife!) that 75p per shot by the local man, would cost more for the number of slides in the loft.It takes time - allow 5 minutes per slide. Imagine 10,000 slides!!Resolution is good, but if the slide is .5" x .5" and you want to blow up the image to 5" x 5", the source might not be good enough - and you come across onion peelingOther than that, the hardware is solid, and the software is pretty good.
