Off the Record is an exciting documentary that goes behind-the-scenes and follows the cast around while they are making the recording for Tony Award winning production Guys and Dolls. This recording features original cast members from the smash 1992 revival. This program captures all of the backstage energy and stars Peter Gallagher, Josie de Guzman, Nathan Lane and Faith Prince preparing for their rolls. The stars sing some of the all-time favorite songs and then sit down to talk about their characters.

Just bought this - again!
I believe I have lent this DVD out to one of my children and now I have had to order it again! My 12-year-old self of yesteryear would never recognize my adult self saying this, but: I just don't like musical theater. That's so sad, because I was that kid who had to memorize all the lyrics to every musical I heard on the radio - from start to finish - in the middle of the night. It gets harder and harder to find something that 'sticks' because there is more money poured into productions, more money at stake, greater competition, and almost everything is just 'good enough,' but also, quite polished, professional, and really very good. Ho, hum.As much as I appreciate how every singer headlining productions on Broadway has great talent, there are just so many. Peter Gallagher singing in 'Guys and Dolls' makes me forget my jaded musical tastes and have to listen again and again.

Guys and Dolls meets up with the finest recording crew possible! It's a winning DVD.
G&D is so old there is a danger in its actors giving the aura of "taking it for granted". But not with THIS cast ofthe best of Broadway's stars. The show was a mega hit in its most recent stage appearance in New York City andfor a change, someone decided to capture the recording of the music album for CD, and turned it into a televisionmost-watched program that resulted in the recording of the "soundtrack" being captured for television. For the actorthis is a lesson in working on a musical, and for the producer, instrumentalists, and others interested in how Broadwayshows' music gets committed to CD, this is a don't miss. All the stars - JK Simmons, Nathan Lane, Faith Prince, etc., are theknown pros of Broadway who gathered for this terrific performance which ran 1992-through 1995, and we are most fortunatethat the late Edward Strauss conducted, and that the well known actors signed on for the cast. This recording features all ofthem in a video made right inside the studio during the sountdrack recording. It's a barrel of fun!

GOOD BUT NOT GREAT
A clear, clean picture of the recording session ... or more accurately, the songs recorded. If you are interested in the process rather than the results, see the video of Bernstein conducting the cross-over WEST SIDE STORY

I loved this DVD!
What a great opportunity for a behind-the-scenes look at the recording of the cast album. If you enjoy Broadway shows, and this one in particular, you'll swoon over the performances here. Great insights into how to decide what is good enough, and what happens when there are directorial disagreements behind the scenes - if you're good, you have your own ideas, but who wins out? More than anything, it's the performers who win you over with their fabulous vocals and style...and some surprise faces in the cast, of actors you didn't know were singers. Faith Prince is amazing!

Wonderful in every way
I love the movie and the soundtrack but also love this cast album. I saw it on Broadway back in 1992. Believe me, this has outstanding performances and spectacular RCA sound, engineered by Paul Goodman, one of the best in the business. Faith Prince is a standout Miss Adelaide.

Theatre Appreciation: A Chance to Observe True Professionals at Work
I remember watching this video in 1992 on television. I had to own it and found it on Amazon. Not only is the music a joy to listen to, the cast recreates this legendary American Broadway musical with great passion. You get to see a younger Nathan Lane and Peter Gallagher plus other Broadway professionals (actors, actresses, musicians, sound crew) working together. I recommend this DVD to any viewer who appreciates the work of theatre- a must for those who collect.
