I bought this to use for fermenting small batches of foods right on my kitchen counter. The larger ones can get in the way there. I had a prejudice against buying a crock of questionable origin for fear of low-grade or toxic enamel. I had more faith in one made in the U.S. or Europe but the prices were steeper for sure.I paid the higher price for this and was not disappointed with the quality. This Boleslawiec crock looks every bit as nice as the photo's. No obvious defects. I am happy I purchased this one rather than the lower-cost crocks. It reeks of tradition, in a very nice way.The opening is approx 3-1/4" in diameter; just large enough to fit my hand fully into it for washing or loading / unloading. I am a 6 ft. tall man with medium sized hands. (for additional sizing info, the distance from my thumb-tip to pinky-tip with hand fully outstretched is 9"). So I don't think most people will need to worry about this being too small to wash or load.The entire interior (including under-side of the rim) is fully glazed so no worries about any surfaces absorbing contents from your brine.True, this does not come with weights. I was able to make some by cutting up a scrap of plate-glass (3/16" thick) on my wet diamond tile saw. A bit crude but effective. I made these half-round weights with a radius of 2-3/4" and this size was a good starting point.

Love my fermenting jar top was broke, co. Sent a new one very satisfied.
