Great book, awesome paintings
First of all, thanks to Amazon for an excellent service.. I live in Ecuador (South America) and don't have too much chances to get good contemporary art books. This book gives the opportunity to see many of Doig's first works and the recent ones. The buyer won't feel dissapointed. You can get to see the images on a good size, the color reproduction is acceptable. Doig's paintings does not only show a lot of his imagination but also an awesome technique. It is not boring at all to contemplate the million details he makes all over the canvas. Great use of the palette. Excellent resource for painters esentially because in this type of work you get to understand that you have to get over your fears or to take advantage of your mistakes. Doig's paintings give you a real sense of freedom and the love of the artist for his job.To Amazon: I gave you my whole trust and you made a perfect job. Congratulations

Some Great. Some Cheese.
I recommend "No Foreign Lands" over this collection.(though, admittedly, 2 or 3 paintings are phenomenal)Many works in this book just don't hold together. You'll see a background that is brilliant, sensuous and mysterious. Then, Doig will undercut it with a crispforeground subject that is almost an illustration.I do like the way he shows earlier paintings of the same subjectbefore revealing the final masterpiece. And it is still fairly pleasing to see a painting that is partiallystunning. I cover the cheesie foreground subject with my hand.At this point, Doig is too inconsistent to deserve the title "great".

A Modern Master of Atmosphere and Disquiet
Doig is an interesting contemporary artist. He is interesting because he is a painter, a very good one, using more or less traditional materials. He is interesting because he does not go out to shock. He paints real things in real situations, but in an interesting way. His one concession to the contemporary art market is the size of his canvasses.Of course, the painter has to compete in the modern art market, not just for buyers, although that is obviously fundamental, but also for attention. A small, perfectly executed canvas would be lost in an exhibition, frieze or gallery next to giant installations, shouty multimedia creations and elephant dung portraits. So big it has to be.This creates an insurmountable barrier for a book such as this. Doig is not as unreproducible as Mark Rothko, because his paintings are of something. But a book cannot hope to convey the sense of size given by a large canvas and so recreate the atmospherics of sharing a room with it.Nevertheless, within this limitation, this book does a good job. It reproduces Doig’s colours fairly well and does go some way towards reproducing the sense of disquiet produced by some of his paintings – the policeman standing in the lake, the strange woman adrift in a canoe or the boy walking on thin ice.If you have seen some Doig at a gallery or think you might want to, then this is a good place to familiarise yourself with some of his paintings. It is an excellent pictorial summary of his career up to 2007.The written material in the book is less useful. I got almost nothing from it and felt that I would be better off on Wikipedia or dredging the Guardian web page for old reviews. So four stars and not five.

Peter Doig.
Lived up to my expectations after I saw his exhibition in Edinburgh - will probably ask for the latest, on that exhibition, for a Christmas present.
