An Oscar-worthy performance from the great Cillian Murphy
A magnificent, touching, vulnerable, Oscar-worthy performance from one of the best actors of our time, Cillian Murphy. If you see him as the tough, war-hardened gang boss in "Peaky Blinders" and then this--you won't believe it's the same person. He is rare. There are only a few actors in the world right now who can touch him. This is an actor who was given the choice of any role in "Inception", where he could have been a bigger star and made more money, but instead, he chose a smaller role because it was more interesting to him (and even then, he stole the picture as the sad, lonely corporate son). He is anti-Hollywood and celebrity and not in it for fame or money, but for the love of acting --and it shows. I think the reason why he's not bigger in Hollywood is he doesn't want to be. He is intensely private about himself in interviews because he says actors should be invisible, and if you're focusing on him, Cillian, you won't be focusing on the character. Now THAT is an actor--not a movie star! This film is a bit odd in tone and takes getting used to--is it a comedy, a fantasy, a drama? Is it a bit fey and sugary-sweet? It seemed that way to me at first, but Cillian hooked me with this performance. Innocent, childlike Kitten goes on adventures where she refuse to see the ugly in the world, and yet is a survivor as well. The scene that made me tear up was when she was working in the peep show, dressed like a doll on the swing, and yet still kept her dignity. Liam Neeson comes in as a client and tells her a story. Cillian played with stillness, and acted completely with his eyes. It was that scene where I said--we are in the presence of acting greatness here. And not for nothing, but as Kitten, he is the most beautiful woman you've ever seen.

I Love Kitten
I had to see this film because I had seen Cillian Murphy on Peaky Blinders. As anyone knows who has seen the program on Netlfix, Murphy plays a very ambitious and tough leader of a gang in 1920s Birmingham, England. When I found out this actor played a transvestite in a 2005 film I couldn't believe it. That he manages to be utterly convincing in such different roles is proof of his great talent. This is an Irish independent film and will not appeal to a broad audience. The opening scenes have birds talking! Most Americans are used to a film being a comedy or drama and somewhat predictable. It's a strange film in many ways! Without spoiling the plot, I can say there are scenes that are moderately violent and may be followed immediately by something very funny. Watching it for the first time could be compared with being on a roller coaster. Patrick "Kitten" Braden is a young man in the early 1970s, growing up in a conservative small town. In that time and place it is understandable that a young man who wears makeup and wants a sex change operation has trouble being accepted. He leaves his home town and the film shows his adventures in London. If you like unconventional films and are not bothered by the subject matter you might enjoy this film. If you are already a big Cillian Murphy fan this is a must see. Near the end of film he is wearing a blonde wig, women's clothes and is absolutely stunning! A film is often quickly forgotten but this is one I want to buy. In an interview Murphy said he fell in love with the character when he read the script. I have to admit so did I.

More charm than a box of marshmallow cereal
A pretty great but definitely rated R flick. It's perfectly cast, and every scene is more memorable than the last.

This is not Peaky Blinders
All the same, what a find. Great ensemble acting and support for Cillian. I think I’m going to binge watch all his movies. He is fearless and takes risks with his characters and choice of film. Is Oppenheimer his academy award year?

And it is wonderful, impressive
Another one you will not see at Loew's Cinema 48. What? No car chases? No explosions, no body counts? What kind of a movie do you want me to go see??One more foreign independent film that flies under, no, over, way over the American radar. This film embodies Acting! Character portrayal! Splendid direction. Clever, inspired cinematography. We see here actors who strive to "become the persona". And it is wonderful, impressive, overwhelming to behold. Hollywood, unfortunately, cannot, or perhaps does not want to produce films of this nature. They are difficult and challenging to make. More importantly, they would most likely not generate a sufficient cash return, which is sad. This film is the perfect formula of acting, delightful and appropriate musical background, inspired directing and lovely camera work. So many events occur simultaneously during this story that one will find himself/herself perhaps watching the film for a second time. I humbly confess to having had to do exactly this, simply because I could not take in all the subtleties and nuances unfolding during the presentation.Admittedly, this will not appeal to "millions of viewers". However, this film has much to give: laughter, tears, tenderness, anger, violence...absolutely all of the ingredients which make up our lives. Do watch this film. And if you remain unmoved, untouched by Kitten, and her friends, you have much more self-control than I have.

Cillian Murphy!
Cillian is a revelation here. His performance is not like anything I’ve seen from him and it’s a poignant and sensitive story.

Cillian at His Best
I learned a lot about the life of someone born one gender but with the heart and mind of another. Anyone who does not get the whole transvestite issue should see it. Cilian Murphy at his finest. Poingnant with a lot of laughs as well.

Stunning performance
One of the best surprise about Cillian Murphy filmography. That movie is a masterpiece. Cillian is absolutely amazing as Kitten; And knowing he wanted to play that character so much because he loves the book, and still has a soft spot for that character made it even better.Truly one of his best performance.

Weirdly and Wonderfully Whimsical
This is one of those rare films I can watch every now and then and which never fails to make me smile. Although the story of Patrick 'Kitten' Braden has all the ingredients of one of those depressing Irish dramas with misery heaped upon misery (an abandoned baby, a foster mother who takes the child in for the money not for love, a catholic priest, a school run by priests, a transgender youth, the IRA, homelessness, exploitation, an unplanned pregnancy, etc.), she tells it in such a manner that no matter what catastrophe befalls her or those around her, you aren't wondering so much if she'll get through it (you more or less know she will) but how. The episodic style of the film works well, making it possible to concentrate on the interesting and entertaining events in Kitten's life without the need to fill in all the gaps. The cast is wonderful, with Cillian Murphy giving the performance of a lifetime in the lead, and such greats as Liam Neeson, Liam Cunningham, Brendan Gleeson (in a Wombles suit if you please), Stephen Rea, a very young Ruth Negga, and, in a short cameo, Dominic Cooper in supporting roles. Eamonn Owens, who played the title character in Neil Jordan's 'The Butcher Boy' returns as an IRA man, and punk rocker Gavin Friday appears as one of the men in Kitten's life. Alone the fun of seeing Murphy sing a duet with him up on stage, dressed in a glittering squaw outfit, is worth the price of the DVD. Apparently he really did manage to hit the high notes of the Nancy Sinatra part of 'Sand'.The eclectic soundtrack of songs that would have been popular in the Ireland of the 1970s the film is set in, works wonderfully well. And this from someone who ordinarily wouldn't be caught dead listening to Joe Dolan or 'Honey'.All in all this is a wonderfully entertaining film, and if you aren't looking for meaningful solutions to the social issues it touches on, but are willing to go with the whimsical approach, there is much to like about it. Watch it, let it make you smile, enjoy the wonderful costumes of the glittering (literally) Kitten character and the outrageousness of it all. Life's too short to take it all too seriously. As to the DVD: I found it difficult to understand some of the dialogue when the actors speak in a very low voice, but with subtitles available this wasn't much of a problem. The extras include a commentary by director Neil Jordan and Cillian Murphy and featurette. Both are nice additions to the film. There are also a trailer, a photo gallery and a few extended scenes. Product reviewed: Breakfast On Pluto [DVD] [2005].
