How long do the batteries last before the device stops working?

Entirely depends on the refresh rate settings for WiFi data and how close the nearest WiFi access point is to the sensor. I have two of these sensors, with both configured to update the readings via WiFi every 30 minutes. 3 months in on the original batteries and the app still shows the battery levels on both as full (4/4 battery pips showing)

Is there a way to circumvent the need for Location Services to be enabled, or has the manufacturer removed this requirement?… wont buy till fixed.

On Android, location permissions have been necessary for a few years now for apps which have a Bluetooth connection function. Manufacturers can't get around this, Google built the requirement into Android. You will find exactly the same for e.g. wireless headphones. The previous answer is poorly informed, or possibly referring to iOS. The only way a manufacturer could get around this is to remove Bluetooth functionality from their app/device.
