NICE FILM
I HAD NO PRECONCEIVED IDEA OF THIS FILM SO SAT OPEN MINDED TO WATCH IT. I LIKED THIS FILM, IT COVERED A NUMBER OF ISSUES, BAD BOY MADE GOOD, BROUGHT UP BY A FATHER WHO HAS MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES MEETS SWEET GIRL. IT ALSO SHOWS THE IMPORTANCE PLACED ON SERVING MILITARY RECEIVING LETTERS FROM HOME. I WATCHED THE EXTRAS AFTER WATCHING THE FILM AND WAS GLAD THE ALTERNATE ENDING HAD NOT BEEN USED. THERE IS A BIG TWIST IN THE FILM THAT IS MOST UNEXPECTED AND THROWS EVERYTHING INTO A DIFFERENT LIGHT

Just my type of film
Really enjoyed this film, moving story and great actors. Thought all the actors were fab, and couldn't take my eyes off Channing Tatum. If you are an emotional person, have your tissues ready, I needed them. This is the second film I've watch by Nicholas Sparks and are thoroughly enjoying the storylines and films. If you want an easy to watch film, some sad moments in it, then this is for you. Would certainly recommend and most definetly watch again.

Such a beautiful film. Sad though
I loved this film. It has a beautiful story, it’s easy to follow, it hasn’t got an ‘expected’ ending like some films and it has been filmed beautifully. I really recommend it.

Dear John
Solid performances but lacking some imagination with the dialogue.

Dreary film attempts to make female hypergamy acceptable
Genuinely a terrible film. Short periods of listless conversation set between montages that show the passage of time. Trying to tell a story with too little content. And what of the content? Well, an honourable serviceman (John) falls in love with a girl during a break, and they commit to a relationship as he goes back overseas. Then 9/11 happens, and feels compelled to defend his country. The girl throws a tantrum at this, and then shortly after he redeploys, dumps him for a safe and easy option back home. He's emotionally cut to pieces, and stays deployed for years until having to return home after his father dies. The girl, with her new husband ill with cancer, turns to John for emotional support and incredibly seems frustrated that the guy whose heart she tore out now doesn't want to be there to make her feel better. Talk about a sense of entitlement and emotional abuse! The worst thing is that this poor guy, rather than move on, continues to inexplicable love this heartless floozy and even sells his dead dad's prized coin collection to pay for hospital treatment for the husband of his ex-gf! Absolutely absurd. The hint of an emotional reunion at the end of the film is just the cherry on this dog excrement of a film and plot. If the situation were even remotely reversed you wouldn't be rooting or forgiving to the man in this situation. Awful, awful film.
