Q: I just got it and it smells! Can it be tossed in the washer?

I wouldn't think so. That's a plastic smell you smell. It will disparate before you know it

Q: How does the bottom straps work? Where do you hook them ?

First of all, a big think you for whoever came up with this idea. As for the bottom straps, I hooked them to a spring under the seat. They work great for anyone sitting in the back seat. Keeps down the clutter.

Q: Will it Survive the hot summer?

It's pretty good quality compared to what you can get at Walmart. I would go for tinting my windows to keep anything in the car from going bad. Yes it will survive a hot summer. But take care of it
