"¡Pachanga!"
Full of color and excitement, this book is a representative of a diverse perspective (Temple, Martinez, & Yokota, 2011, p. 141). I enjoyed the vibrant illustrations as I read about Chato preparing for his friend, Nova Boy, a surprise birthday party. Nova Boy had never had a celebration for his birthday. Actually, he did not even know for sure when he was born. Chato saw this as a great opportunity to get together with his party animals friends to throw a "pachanga" (Soto, 2000, p. 8). Light-hearted and humorous, this story moves swiftly as the illustrations take you deeper into the culture and traditions of the cats. Emotions, both sad and happy, are expressed so vividly as each character is drawn. You can't help but feel sorrow for Nova Boy, and ultimately, feel elated by his surprise that his friends would put so much effort into having a special party just for him. The true meaning of friendship and compassion is exceptionally highlighted in this story.References:Soto, G. (2000). Chato and the party animals.
