This sponge filter uses bubbles of air from an external air pump, or an integral water pump to draw water through the sponge. As water is drawn out through the lift tube or pump, it is replaced by water entering the sponge. The sponge is a mechanical filter and the surface of all the bubbles or pockets in the sponge provide a bed for the bacteria of a biological filter. The bacteria help to break down harmful waste (ammonia and nitrite). Sponge filters provide both mechanical and biological filtration. Most sponge filters are reasonably efficient filters for small volume tanks. These filter are excellent for small size fish like dwarf cichlid, guppy, killifish etc., or for hatcheries, maternity tanks, and fry tanks, as the filter produces minimal current and has almost no way to suck the fish through the filter. Also, the air infusion chamber produces minute bubbles which increase the oxygen solubility.

One suction cup really isn't enough to hold these too well once they're good and settled in
These are a significant improvement over the very similar ones I had before. I think they're exactly the same except these new ones have two suction cups and the old ones only had one. Which was a major PITA. One suction cup really isn't enough to hold these too well once they're good and settled in. When they're full of water the sponges are heavy enough to where they want to kinda "droop" forward. That and they tend to want to slide down the glass during water changes. These ones will probably be way better with two suction cups. And you can't beat the price for four of them.

I love the extra biological filtration they provide
I have the four divided amongst three different tanks. Two are in my 10 gallon quarantine tank. And one is in my 55 gallon platy and betta tank. And the last in my general community tank with amano shrimp, tetras, and Corydoras. I love the extra biological filtration they provide. The two in 55 gallon tanks aren’t the only filtration I use but are more of a extra help to a HOB and canister filter. The fish love it because usually extra food will get stuck to the side and the shrimp hang out eating the dretitus that build up in between tank cleaning. They are excellent for fry care in that there is no chance it can get sucked into the filter like other means of filtration and they keep the water surface moving to help with the gas exchange necessary for aquariums. It also isn’t too strang and my betta hangs out around it with ease.

Perfect for bettas
For the purpose I am using them for (many betta tanks ran by a single air pump), these are PERFECT. Running 8 of these on a large air pump is substantially more cost effective than running 8 individual power filters. The bettas also enjoy that there is less turbulence in their tanks. As a few other people mentioned, they are somewhat larger than I had pictured in my head but that is perfect... more surface area for beneficial bacteria growth.

Works really well
I got this 4 pack and the single ones. But this is better. The single order one has only one suction cup. This has two. Also this one produces more bubbles and easier to adjust than the single order one. Theyre really different.

These are great filters. I have mine in a 10 gallon
These are great filters. I have mine in a 10 gallon, 20 gallon and in my 55 in addition to the HOB filtration. The fourth one is running in another tank just to get 'seeded'. I'd recommend these. The company ships fast and well packaged. Very satisfied with my order.
