X Marks the Spot
Join Dakota Crumb, Treasure Hunter, who is on a mission to find The Purple Jewel of Egypt which she wants to put in her Mousehole Museum. She has a treasure map where X marks the spot of this wonderful jewel. However, the map leads her to the big museum, a treacherous way to go. She must quietly go through it to avoid the many dangers there that could keep her from her quest. As she makes her way through it, she spies some other objects that will be perfect for her museum. Can she be quick enough to grab them without being caught? This fun picture book has just enough suspense to give little ones a tiny, ticklish shiver—and to cause them to ask to read this again and again. Kids will laugh when they discover what The Purple Jewel of Egypt really is. Dakota Crumb will keep them holding their breathe as she faces one close-call after another. In the back of the volume, there is a list of items for upcoming treasure hunters to try their hand at finding. This over-sized, hard-backed book will become a favorite with children pre-school through third grade. I recommend this 5-star picture book to all children who enjoy fun and excitement.Candlewick Publishers has provided Tickmenot with a complimentary copy of, Dakota Crumb, Tiny Treasure Hunter, for the purpose of review. A tiny investigator comes out at night to explore her museum in search of a priceless treasure.
If a classroom lesson is on museums and what children can find there, this book provides an exciting and fun introduction to the unit. Dakota Crumb is an endearing detective mouse who goes out into the museum by night to find a treasure. She finds knights on horses, paintings, statues, mummies, temples and, uh oh, a giant cat! However, the cat is just a museum statue from Egyptian times. Will Dakota find the Purple Jewel of Egypt by morning? Indeed she does, and after she returns to her mousehole, she sets it down on display with all of her other treasures. Her museum opens for all of the animals under the museum, and the illustrations make these critters come alive for children. At the end of this treasure hunt, children find a list of things to search for as they revisit the pages of the book. There are icons and words, appealing to both readers and nonreaders. Michalak has produced a fantastic book that shows that “treasure” varies from hunter to hunter.

Dakota Crumb: Tiny Treasure Hunter is one of those book within a book within a book books that kids love. At first, it’s a thrilling tale of a treasure hunter. Then, it’s the story of a mouse museum curator. And finally, it becomes an interactive treasure hunt for readers. With lively text and picture-in-picture illustrations, young readers will be enchanted by this fast-moving quest.
