d'Aulaires' Book of Norwegian Folktales

The stories are so different than what you might be used to. But the repetition makes them great for bedtime.

As a newbie Heathen follower I have been struggling to find reliable and unbiased recourses to render the folklore and myths of the gods and people. I FOUND IT IN THESE BOOKS (also bought the copy about Norse mythology based off and following with the Poetic Edda and sagas). I love the storytelling especially since is approachable in a way that I can enjoy reading these stories with my 5 year old son without boring him to death with convoluted language styles of the translated eddas. The illustrations are nostalgic of the early to mid 1900s style but captivating and depicts the characters and events in ways that are kid approved in my opinion. Highly recommend to anyone wanting to read or understand any type of legend/myth/folklore stories that aren’t biblical or Roman Greco and that give a different look into ancient culture and the worldview from a different perspective and belief system.

I have treasured books from the d'Aulaires all my life. The stories are well presented and the illustrations are amazing.

I enjoyed discovering these folk tales from Norway. Most had similar story lines from other folk tales I've read. It was fun to see the similarities, but also how the stories changed to match the culture.

Three grandkids are enthralled with myths and folk tales. Adding to their knowledge. Nicely illustrated, stories are approximately 10 pages on decent sized print so are not a struggle for age7+ and part of 4th grade Waldorf curriculum.

The d'Aulaires never disappoint. My children have treasured these books since they were very small.I hope someday that I will get to share them with grandchildren.

Wonderful illustrations...exciting, but not too scary for children......a favorite book that I am giving to a young reader.
