Magellan's Navigator (Albo Book 1)

A very enjoyable novel
I wasn't too sure about reading a, basically, maritime adventure but as I had little knowledge of Magellan's travels I decided to give it a go and what a great read it was. Seen through the eyes of the hired navigator, Albo, the story is of incredible journeys across never ending seas, facing mutiny, disease and attacks. Well written, even excusing the American words and has definitely made want to read the sequel.

A well-written, authentic, enjoyable, educational book.
I really enjoyed this book. It felt well-researched, with the characters and events feeling fully formed and authentic. I loved the language used by Albo (the navigator), it felt true to the time but still readable to todays audience. The dialogue between characters gave historical insight as well as being enjoyable to read.I would liked to know Albo a bit deeper; the book could've explored his character a bit more. That isnt to say he was wooden, I felt I knew him, it's just the story is so amazing there isnt space for fleshing out characters I guess. It is a journal after all, and has that perfunctory feel. Which I also really liked.Having read it I feel entertained and educated. There is also a warmth from the book, as well as some poignant, moving passages; the character Andrew of Bristol will live with me now, as will the brave, stoic, honourable, kind Albo. Lots of thanks to the author.
