Liberty Meadows Volume 4: Cold Cold Heart

Almost finishes the story...
As great a story as Liberty Meadows is, I was frankly disappointed that this fourth book did not include the Wedding Issue. The story does not end with this book...and that bugs me. Other than that, the book was a great purchase.

Great Drawings, Funny, But No End In Sight
I have never read Liberty Meadows before, but I love comics. My favorites are Calvin and Hobbs, The Lockhorns, Herman, Dennis the Menace, and Foxtrot. The drawings in Liberty Meadows are some of the best I've seen in comic art. The story line is funny and the characters are easy to get acquainted with and likable. It is a fun series; however, I don't know if I will be buying any more of these books. It is obvious that the two main characters are never going to get together. Like the TV series Cheers, the characters the show centered on never got together. Once it became obvious this wasn't going to happen and the writers were just going to continue to hang the audience with the sexual tension of the love interest unfulfilled the show (Cheers) lost my interest. I can see this is exactly where Liberty Meadows is going. The love interest that locks the stories together will not be finalized. That is all I really need to know. Because that key element of the story will not be concluded I will probably not be reading any more of these books. I want stories that end, not stories that leave the reader in limbo for months or years on end.AD2

I stumbled upon the Liberty Meadows series while looking at another book portraying the work of Frank Cho. This is some of his early work and I have gotten more than a few laughs over it. If your a Frank Cho fan, pick these books up.

Almost Perfect
Containing series #28-36, this comic book is made from thick paper, the ink is well printed without flaws and the book contains several covers and preliminary sketches in addition to the comic strips. It's all made in black/white, except the cover, which is made from a nice and thick glossed cardboard paperback. Why 4 stars, not 5? Well, despite the undeniable quality of Cho's work, there is a bit of a problem. Two, actually. It's not the spelling errors, of which there are a few more than previous albums; the Monkey has previously answered readers on this and such things happen on occasion. Here's the first real issue: some of the stories contain quite a bit of text, which is not Cho's strong suit. He's not really a writer - he's an illustrator first and foremost; an artist. So when he builds panels that consist of 75% storytelling text and the images are small, he's not really showing off his best work. The MAIN problem, however, is that this is the last album and it ends on a cliffhanger. The conclusion of which was then sold separately in "The Wedding Album", which is not commonly available. Cold, cold heart, indeed. One can only hope that this special feature will be offered in a reprint at some later date, so we humble fans may possess the full body of Cho's "Liberty Meadows" work. The main story in "Cold, cold heart" is the unresolved love connection between Brandy and Frank. As the jezebel Jen seduces the wimpy veterenarian in order to play with his heart, a love triangle is set up, threatening to douse the kindling flame between Frank and Brandy. But we know she's just toying with him, don't we? We know Brandy's where his heart truly lies, right? Well, yes, but as his head is filled with thoughts about the blonde succubus, Brandy seeks out an alternative to find love: her ex-boyfriend Roger, who eventually proposes marriage. Another love triangle! This is where the book ends; Brandy about to marry someone else while Frank is otherwise occupied. Sadly, this 4th instalment does not resolve this drama - despite the fact that the story exists and was published some years ago.

It "cho" is good fun (sorry, bad pun but excellent comic)
Liberty Meadows is full of crisp lines and irreverent characters. Not your typical animal-themed strip, the last collected volume leaves you wanting to know more...
