A fascinating bit of backstory behind one of the series biggest and baddest
Requiem for Medusa: Tyrus Rechs: Contracts & Terminations Book 1by Jason Anspach and Nick ColeKindle Edition, 291 pagesPublished June 15th 2018 by Galaxy's EdgeASIN B07DS8B38BWhat price would you be willing to pay for vengeance? How much of your substance would you be willing to spend, so that the wicked would not escape their due? To see justice done, even though the heavens may fall? For Tyrus Rechs, that turns out to be just about everything. And in another sense, it turns out to be not much at all. To resolve that enigma, we need to understand the character of Tyrus Rechs. Rechs is fundamentally a very simple man, but to explain why is not so simple.Let us start by looking at similar characters in fiction. One of the closest examples I can think of is Robert E. Howard’s Solomon Kane:Solomon Kane is fanatical in personality, unadorned in both speech and deportment, and convinced of the absolute sovereignty of God. His characteristic boast is something I could see Rechs saying:"It has fallen upon me, now and again in my sojourns through the world, to ease various evil men of their lives."In another man, we might call this a humblebrag, but for both Kane and Rechs, they are simply being honest. Each of them is an avatar of truth and justice, and are constitutionally incapable of either dishonesty or subtlety."Just call my Tyrus. He said it like he was a normal person and not one of the most wanted men in the galaxy. Forget all the rumors, ghost stories, and legends that littered his reputation. He had a warm, almost wry voice that held no pretensions within it. If anything, he seemed casually ordinary and of few words. If you were to have asked her later, after everything had happened, what the truth sounded like if it had a voice, she would’ve told you it sounded like Tyrus Rechs. Like he was some kind of galactic true north that compasses couldn’t stop themselves from finding."Fundamentally, neither man wants for anything. They have nothing, and want nothing, because they are sufficient unto themselves. Thus, it is easy for them to lay it all out each and every time, without hesitation. Whether as a soldier, or a bounty hunter, Tyrus is willing to lay down his life for others. But this time, something is different. That something is a woman."Rechs felt nothing.Which was, as he well knew, when he was at his most dangerous. He rarely felt anything at all before he killed people. Or during it. Or after. Maybe because he’d done it so long. Because it was one of the only things he knew how to do well. And to him, that was the way it needed to be when you killed someone. Emotionless. Otherwise…mistakes were made."Impersonal personification of justice he may be, but Tyrus Rechs is also a man, and a soldier; stone cold killer he may be, he is is also capable of love. Not just the fraternal love which motivates men to run towards danger instead of away from it, but also the wild abandon of erotic love. Which explains one of the biggest questions I had in the Galaxy’s Edge series: what happened to Tyrus Rechs? Now it all makes sense. As for the book itself, this volume struck me as the most cinematic of all of Anspach and Cole’s work so far. The climactic set-piece battle on a ruined world between Rechs and the man who betrayed his woman, I could see it. This would make a hell of a movie. Or a mini-series, as some devoted fans remind me frequently.Cassio Royale itself, the doomed pleasure palace, gambling station, and wretched hive of scum and villainy, would also be spectacular. Perhaps we shall see it someday. This book is a hell of a ride, and a fascinating bit of backstory behind one of the series biggest and baddest. Highly recommended.

Happy for hard-core Rechs action
If you've never read a Galaxy's Edge book, don't worry - this could stand alone for the most part (save a few references that GE fans will pick up). Enter Tyrus Rechs, a 'bounty hunter' with a score to settle over a gal he loved who was snuffed by some unsavory characters. Wait, you may say. A bounty hunter (think Boba Fett-type, but hard-core brutal, who never would have let Solo get off being frozen by Vader unless he'd put a slug or two in Han first) is the GOOD GUY?! Woah. Yep, he is. Despite being a one-man wrecking machine who is like the hand of God in how he metes out justice; a slug-throwing, blaster-toting magician of destruction, Rechs vows to take down anyone who had a hand in the death of the woman known as 'Medusa' in certain circles, and he isn't going to let Intergalactic law, crime bosses or a game that pits competitors into a last man standing arena of death get in his way. I am sure I'm not the only Galaxy's Edge reader who was excited to see a Tyrus Rechs spinoff of sorts; a story dedicated to his life outside of the Legion and House of Reason. I love that the book showed his humanity despite his unrelenting determination to see things through, consequences be damned. Is it weird to cheer for a guy most would tag as "bad" or even a murderer? Maybe it would if you couldn't help but relate to what motivates Rechs beyond the actions some might deem immoral or unethical. For sci-fi nerds and even those who enjoy military fiction, this is one of my favorite books in this "world" Anspach and Cole have cooked up as the non-politically correct version of battles in space (and life in an unknown galaxy). If revenge is a dish best served cold, the requiem is ALWAYS best served with red hot lead and high-powered blaster bolts.

The world that the see authors have built is amazing. I stumbled upon this series. Now I'm hooked. Having discovered the reading order I'm retracing my steps to fill in gaps. This was a great book to learn history of a great character. Ready to read the next one.

Requiem for Medusa. Bad dog, Great Book!
What could you want in a classic bounty hunter's tale? All that and more are in this book. Tyrus Rechs is the name you use when you want to scare monsters before bed time. He's the boogey man of bounty hunter's and some one has done him dirty! When a sleazy group of high rollers think they can murder one of the few people Rechs would consider a friend, he decides it's hunting season on all involved. This book features LOTS of military contractor style action. The author's were excellent in crafting Rechs' tactics through a scifi lens so that even the first scene of the book has an amazing opening. I didn't see that one coming and neither did the bad guys!Rechs is the tortured soul waiting out his days before he can fulfill a purpose he can barely remember. This book is a great examination of the soldier who has been soldiering too long. It also represents a good look at how those steeped in violence can also be tender. They are dogs of war but occasionally love a good belly rub as well. The universe would do well to remember that these dogs are trained to kill and all the belly rubs in the universe aren't going to heel a Rechs that has seen a friend go down. You do not need to be well versed in the Galaxy's Edge Universe to read these books. It is an amazing start to peer into the soul of a character that is a heavy presence in the rest of the books. Jason Anspach and Nick Cole have crafted a scifi universe brimming with military brotherhood and mysterious wonders. Take a look at this book. You won't be disappointed.

If you don't know who Tyrus Rechs is you are missing out on an amazing character, soldier, legionnaire. This story is violent, graphic, but also highly emotional.I could not fault this book and am eager for more of his history.
