Xin Xu (Professor of Jewish studies at the University of Nanjing) skilfully weaves the traditional oral lore of Kaifeng's ancient Jewish community into a fascinating and involving narrative. Some tales are quite comical (e.g. Ai and Matteo Ricci's muddled meeting) whereas others are quite moving (the joining of the Zhang family and the Emperor's gift of Chinese surnames).
