Q: Will this hold through intense exercise during the academy or should I just get a shirt stay?

12 years working in security tells me that this is okay for walking, but nothing will keep your shirt tucked through even light exercise. You're better off using nothing for intense workouts. Just get used to re-tucking your uniform.

Q: Like the belt belt very much. At some point the belt can work its way to above the waist. Do they make a black version? Light color very visible.

Not that I know of, there is a black inw made with velcro that worka better

Q: The flexible rubber belt do the bumps go into the shirt or pants? Is there a trick to getting the metal button in place

I wear it bumps out as that seems to work best for me. I put it around my waist, determine where the metal button goes and the put it in place. Then I slide it on and off with the metal button already in position. It is just to hard to keep pushing the metal button in and out

Q: I want to cut off the excess length of this belt, but don't know how much slack I should leave?

I usually put it around my waist without stretching it, then pull a bit more to stretch it with about a 1/2"-1" overlap, force the two ends together, cut off the excess but for about 4", and then I step into it when I put it on. My preference is the Hidden Tailor made by an outfit in KY, which may have to be ordered from them directly, because their rubber is thinner and the belt is more stretchy, which works better for me, although that may seem counterintuitive.
