First Spear: Rudimenta

First Spear : Rudimenta
I am a huge fan of historical fiction. First Spear: Rudimenta is an excellent example of this genre. The characters are well-developed and the story kept me engrossed. The author's knowledge of the Roman Legions was accurate and engaging. The story blended a mixture of humor and rich details that made me feel that I was part of the story. The evolution of Crastinus from a raw recruit to a leader was believable and I hope Mr. Nielson is working on the sequel, so I can learn more about the campaigns and battles of the characters. This was a real page-turner in the tradition of Bengtsson's "The Long Ships" which is my favorite book of all time. The mixture of Mr. Nielson's use of humor, historic events and character development combine to make this a can't miss read for anyone. FIVE STARS!

Not for everyone
the editing was horrible. Hard to read, fragmented sentences. Does give you a different perspective of the Roman army.

Good story
The story is entertaining enough, however the book needs to be re- edited. There are numerous misspellings and typos. Still worth the read if you find the time period interesting.
