Proven Effective for OCD and Anxiety
Is inositol a wonder drug/supplement? I'm a skeptical soul. I've never believed in alternative medicine or supplements for real medical conditions. However, the efficacy of inositol has more than wowed me. My son has autism and severe OCD - he has severely violent reactions to SSRI medication and we'd run out of options, we were referred to a Psychiatrist for a medication consultation. He suggested Inositol as an alternative to SSRIs. At first I balked, because I simply did not think a supplement could battle a clinically serious condition. The doctor understood my doubts printed out studies for me to look over. One study he showed me proved Inositol to be more effective in just *one week* than Fluvoxamine (SSRI treatment for anxiety disorder) in the treatment of severe anxiety disorders. Other studies show it to be just as effective and sometimes more effective than a slew of medications used to treat OCD. These are legitimate double-blind scientific studies. Added to this there are no serous side effects EVER known to occur and because it's available as a powder, I can mix it into a liquid (my son will not take pills and the insurance company will not pay for liquid medication). After my research I was more than happy to give it a try. However, one thing I've noted looking at reviews here and at other sites is the importance of dosage. People are dosing themselves all over the scale, but mostly under-dosing . There is no help on the side of the bottle to dose for mental health issues and you have to search out the information. The doses for psychiatric conditions is very HIGH and would have scared me had I not been assured by the psychiatrist that these high doses are necessary for treatment and absolutely safe. Inositol is water-soluble - which means whatever your body does not use it discards - it is not stored in the body. Dosing Guide: OCD: 18 grams a day (split 2-3 times per day) PANIC DISORDER and ANXIETY: 12-18 grams per day (split 2-3 times per day) WARNING: Do NOT take Inositol if you suffer from bipolar disorder - it is known to increase episodic behavior at high doses. (Source: UW Integrative Medicine school of medicine and public health) (Amazon is always a little tetchy about hyperlinks in reviews but search University of Wisconsin Integrative Medicine Supplement Sampler for more info) NOW's Inositol powder contains 730 MILIgrams per 1/4 teaspoon. .73mg inositol x 8 (1/4 tsp doses) = 5.84 Grams (roughly 6 Grams) 1/4 tsp x 4 = 1 full teaspoon So, 2 teaspoons will roughly equal 6 Grams. If treating for OCD take 2 teaspoons Inositol 3 times daily (6 Grams x 3 doses = 18G) If treating for Anxiety take 2 teaspoons Inositol 2 times daily. (6 Grams x 2 doses = 12G) Make sure to use TEASPOONS not tablespoons as your measurement. Take it regularly on a schedule to achieve maximum efficacy and treat it the same as you would a prescribed medication. Common side effects are upset stomach when first taking, should stop after first few weeks, headache, and fatigue. Some people may prefer starting with a smaller dose and titrating up over the course of a few weeks (though we started out on maximum dose and only encountered minor stomach upset and no other side effects). And as with any supplement, check with your doctor or mental health professional. Search around for the best price Do your own research and reach your own conclusions. Highly Recommended!

Flavorless supplement that may help with your PCOS!
I am no doctor. I am just someone who has suffered with PCOS since I've been 12 years old. I had an IUD in consistently since I've been 12. It was just a cover-up for a bunch of symptoms I wasn't dealing with. So I started doing research on different types of supplements and treatments for PCOS, and this supplement came up. You can get a pill with a blend of D-Chiro and Inositol, but to buy both supplements separately is extremely cheaper, you just need to measure out the amounts, which isn't difficult at all. I will say, I can't contribute my regular cycle to just this powder, but all the supplements I have been taking and lifestyle changes. I can at least say this powder is very high quality, and I have had no adverse side effects from taking this supplement. Do your own research, talk to your doctor, and I recommend this product!

Great quality, high potency, great price!
This is the most affordable, high potency, and high quality version of Inositol that I have been able to find thus far. If you need to take high doses of Inositol, you can't find it in a capsule in the US at this time (research has been done using a product that offers it in a more concentrated gelatinized form that is unavailable in the US). I recommend this product to my patients who suffer from a wide range of issues, including, PCOS, endocrine disruption (hypothyroid, etc.), miscarriages, hair loss, constipation, anxiety, OCD, etc. The challenge is that it takes at least a month if not two, of regular use to see a difference, but if you stick with it, you will see improvement of said issues. The dosage noted on the bottle is not enough to achieve full remission of all the above mentioned symptoms, but will definitely help with chronic constipation and PCOS (you may want to just take an oral capsule for lower doses). Consult with an integrative or functional medicine practitioner for more information on higher dosing, but generally, you need to progress VERY SLOWLY as you increase your dose to the required 4-6 tsp/day for anxiety, depression, and OCD. It can take over a month to achieve these higher levels as Inositol can cause diarrhea if you move to quickly! Many of my patients add it to a water bottle and sip from it throughout the day in order to avoid intestinal issues at the higher doses. You will need to work with your provider to see what works best for you. For those who need it, and have the patience to stick with it, this product can be a gift!

or I'd go months with no bleeding but terrible cramps. I've had multiple ruptured ovarian cysts
I suffer from PCOS. And I mean really, truly suffer. Since I was 12 years old I would have heavy bleeding for months at a time, or I'd go months with no bleeding but terrible cramps. I've had multiple ruptured ovarian cysts. It's been a nightmare. A few years ago I had a 10 month long heavy period, followed by 5 months with no period, followed by another 10 month long period and 6 months without a period. Finally I had enough. Up until this I have tried every natural route imaginable for my PCOS. Nothing was working and the thought of medication terrified me. At the age of 28 I was strongly considering a hysterectomy. Prior to this the most effective thing I found for bleeding and cramping was Red Raspberry Leaf, which worked great for easing heavy flow and managing cramps, however it did nothing to regulate my cycle. So I read about this on a forum, and immediately order this bottle off Amazon. By this point it had been about 6 months with no period, but 10 days after starting Inositol I had one. And not just a bleeding, but an actual period that lasted 8 days (that has never happened, I've never had one shorter than 2 weeks of heavy bleeding and terrible cramps in my life). Not only was my period only 8 days, it was light flow and very mild cramps. I started it May 1st 2014 and from then throughout the rest of the year I had 5 periods. All 7-8 days long, mild cramps with light flow. So it hasn't given me a perfect cycle, but that was the most regular I have ever been. It's always been heavy periods that last from weeks to months with terrible cramps, to months without anything. Basically no rhyme or reason at all. But with Inositol, things have gotten better. After mid December I ran out of it and with vacation, holiday stress, family illness and all I went nearly 2 months without taking it and back to a nonstop period. Today is 2/17/15 and I've bleed all but 9 days so far this year. I just started up taking Inositol again 2 days ago and already the bleeding is easing, no more cramps. So that's all the proof I need that this stuff works. Nothing is going to stop me from taking this regularly from here on out. I guess a part of me thought that maybe it was safe to stop, that things were good and it would be okay. That's not the case, apparently it is something I will have to continue to take but that is fine with me because it works! One more thing: For years I've dealt with ovary pain due to cysts. With this stuff, the pain went away. I had one cyst on my left ovary that throbbed for over a year and within a month of taking this there was no more pain. During my 2 months off from taking inositol the ovary pain came back (on my right ovary this time). So it's definitely been taking care of the cyst issue because it's a night and day difference between taking it and not taking it. In just the last few days since restarting it, the cyst pain has eased tremendously. As for dosage, I take a teaspoon in the morning and sometimes another at night. So 1-2 teaspoons per day. Aside from PCOS, I have noticed a slight improvement in my mood and anxiety when taking it. I definitely seem calmer. That was something I didn't notice the firs time around, but after slacking off from taking it I did notice a downward trend in my mood and anxiety. So here's hoping that will improve again!

Promising for anxiety and PCOS, just wish I could get it more in bulk
I originally got this as a way to treat my polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). I ended up having my husband try it to treat his anxiety, and then increased the amount I took, myself, for anxiety after seeing the dramatic changes in my husband. Myo-inositol has been used for two primary purposes -- PCOS, and certain neurological disorders -- and the researched doses depend on the purpose it's used for (and are a ways beyond the "serving size" listed on the label). We've found major benefits to both, so far. However, because the therapeutic dose for neurological benefits is so large (I worked it out to be about 4 teaspoons, based on the information from the label), we burn through this 1lb container in about 2-3 weeks. My biggest complaints, then, are a) there is no way, via Amazon, to buy this brand in larger bulk quantities (either via larger containers, or via multipacks), and b) there's no "subscribe and save" option. Both of these make this brand of Inositol a little expensive for us, both in raw price and in the overhead required to remember to order a new one before our current stock runs out. (Since these things are deal breakers for determining what brand to buy, I've taken a star off. Should the availability change, I'd probably bump this to 5 stars.) But how does the supplement, itself, work? For anxiety: Phenomenally well. It took about three weeks to take full effect, but for my husband, it was like someone flipped a switch. He went from a ball of perpetually-stressed nerves (tight shoulders, tension headaches, etc) to relaxed and proverbially Teflon-coated. Even stressful situations at worked were suddenly not so anxiety-inducing. This enabled him to stop spending as much time doing stress-reducing activities (namely, video games to take his mind off everything that was stressing him out), and more time helping out at home and doing things that would benefit his health and home life (ie - helping keep the house in order, working out, being more active in general, etc). He's also sleeping better and waking up more refreshed (though still not, by any means, a morning person). For me, the changes have been more subtle and gradual, but still noticeable in retrospect. I'm no longer as easily worked up by things that used to easily get to me. I am, in general, more motivated to do things and have more of the energy to do them. For the first time in years, I've had the gumption to do the side projects that I kept putting off. My sleep has also been getting better and I've found myself sleeping more deeply than I have since my son was born (I had become a very light sleeper). For PCOS: The researched time it took to see changes in PCOS were upwards of 12 weeks, and I'm not quite there, yet, so I can't speak on all of the things that's supposed to help. However, the most immediate effect it's had is that my cycles have, so far, been regulated. Until I started taking the Inositol, my periods were very irregular, and I'd sometimes go several months without getting a period. As soon as I started taking the Inositol, though, within a week I had my first period, and my second came 28 days later, which has been a first for me in over five years. I will have to update my review on this front as more time passes, but so far, it has shown great promise and has been at least on par with Metformin (which I had been on in the past) as far as I have the current means to tell.

Quiets food noise
I tried this in both powder and capsule form, definitely prefer powder! I started with the recommended dose and when I didn't see much of a difference I worked my way up to 1 teaspoon twice per day (morning & mid afternoon). I mix it with my collagen, creatine, & electrolytes in the morning, and a packet of True Lemon in the afternoon. It dissolves super easy and doesn't have a weird taste. I feel like my food noise is almost entirely gone, and I don't raid my pantry like a trash panda at 4pm. This is definitely helping me stay within my calorie & macro goals simply by reducing the temptation that was always in the back of my mind. I feel great and its helping me stay on track with my exercise and diet plan.

Keeps me sane.
I really trust Now Foods supplements and was happy to find this on Amazon. I managed a health store for 15+ years and always ordered their products. This is a great price for a great product. I do not have PCOS. I personaly take inositol to help with intrusive thoughts and depression due to my adhd. I take roughly 12,000 mg every morning. Start off on a low dose and gradually increase each week or else you will end up spending the day in the bathroom if you even make it that far! For those that want to take it to calm their nerves or to better relax simply pair it (2,000 mgs is enough) with some magnesium carbonate (400 mgs). I prefer the powder because to get the dosage I like I would have to take several tablets a day and I already take enough supplements as it is. This mixes great in my morning coffee with just a hint of sweetness. If you use creamer you wont taste it at all. I highly recommend.

For those interested in Inositol for OCD.
I came across studies as probably many others did (double blind, placebo controlled) that showed high doses of Inositol (12-18 g per day) were effective in reducing the severity of OCD symptoms. From what I understand, a few studies that would be considered "solid" (although small in size) have confirmed this. As such, I decided to try this product out, as anti-anxiety medication, while effective, certainly has potent side effects. They can certainly dead the anxiety, but at the price of feeling almost drunk or slightly slurry. I was skeptical about this product, as you really never know if something like this will work, and I did not really expect much. I started out with a smaller dose of about 2 grams per day (500 mg pills, 4x day) and have been tapering up. I'm now at about 10 g per day. I have always suffered from what I would describe as "moderate" OCD. It has not been debilitating, but the thoughts and ruminations I've had over the years have certainly been anxiety-inducing and disturbing to me, and at times has interfered with my life. My experience with this product is that there has been a noticeable improvement in my OCD. Here's how I would describe the feeling. Whereas my anxiety used to run pretty rampant and sometimes be continuous, with longer peaks, it has reduced significantly. Many thoughts and anxieties that used to bother me more, now simply don't, or it is much less so. It feels like there is some kind of "roadblock" in the way of OCD in my mind. Things flow easier, and as much as it may come, it just passes without much notice. There is no mental fatigue which is great. The only side effect I can really pinpoint is some possible stomach upset or bloating, but this has been very, very mild. All I can say is though I feel as though my mind has slowed down, I have more clarity and the anxiety is passing away more easily. I would not describe this as a cure by any means, but it could be a useful tool, as much as exercise, good lifestyle choices or other activities that reduce anxiety like meditation. It just feels as though the Inositol has sort of helped unblock something that was gumming up the works mentally, so to speak. The change has been significant enough for more to continue to incorporate this into a daily routine. If you have OCD of any severity level, I think it's worth a try, and certainly has less side effects than prescription meds.

Be careful not to take too much.
Be cautious not to take too much of this supplement. I took 12g, the recommended dose for aiding stress, anxiety and depression and it gave me the worst diarrhoea of my life. I would recommend splitting the dose into two daily servings of 6 grams each.
