Santa Clawed: A Mrs. Murphy Mystery

I’ve read a lot of books in this series. The animals are clever, the characters clear and interesting, the denouement of the mysteries surprising but not gruesome, and I love the Virginia setting. When I feel stressed this is my preferred light bedtime reading.

A mystery and talking animals, set in the season of Christmas, what could be better. Rita Mae gives us another delightful and captivating mystery with the usual dose of Virginia color. Fun and satisfying, it holds your interest to the very end. It is a delightful Christmas present.

The only thing that I ever wish for with the "Mrs. Murphy" series is that the books are never long enough. That, and, maybe if a little more time and space were devoted to character developement or involvement with the main characters, or with their relationships. Like when is "Harry" going to have that baby that was the main reason her husband "deadlined" the marriage decision? "Harry" has a great heart and there is nothing wrong with showing it. I especially like the way that more animal characters are introduced in each book and showing the different ways that the different animals fit into the different living situations. That's real.But let's face it, all the great mystery series are not about the intricate plots. They are about the interesting characters. Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot, Phryne Fisher, or Nick and Nora Charles - who really remembers the story lines? What we remember are the wonderful people who accompany us throughout our lives - whether real or imagined. I like spending time with "Harry" and friends.

I had almost stopped reading the Sneakie Pie mysteries as the quality of both the writing and the story had declined and the stories seemed little more than a format for polictical posturing. After reading that this book was a vast improvement over the previous two, I decided to give the series another chance. I was not disappointed. While no one will ever confuse this series with great literature, they are fun reads and the characters are generally recognizable to almost anyone who grew up in a small town. I am once again eager to read the next installment in this ongoing story of the citizens of Crozet.

I like the Mrs Murphy stories, lite reading and usually fun. Sometimes I even learn something. This was a particularly good story and am sending to my sister to introduce her to Mrs Murphy.

Not one of her better works. In some areas the topics don't flow well. It has to many forced political correctness views forced into dialog. Disappointing the work felt rushed and forced. Love most of her works so I know this not the norm for this writer.

I wanted to start a new book series in my fiction reading and thought these mysterious were narrated through feline eyes. While they aren't exactly, the mystery ideas themselves seem pretty good so far. Love the holiday theme. Item arrived timely and perhaps maybe wrapped a little bit too tightly for opening with care.

Lest you think that well-written "lighter" novels are not worth your time to read, let me tell what a kick I get out of RMB's books. First, I earned a PhD at Univ. of So. Cal...and yes, I do read professional literature and "serious" papers.BUT, give me a light, humorous story (with animals--anthropomorphize as you will or won't)and I am out-of-touch for the evening. Yes, I giggle at Simon and am in awe of Athena. I adore Harry and her cohorts, especially Miranda and Susan.Let down your intellectual snobbery, your "academic" hair, and enjoy a really good read. I have a deal with Amazon: They let me know whenever Rita Mae has let loose with another delight.

Another series that I love and cant wait for the next book to come out. I reread all the books once a year. Miss Murphy with the help of Tee Tucker, a brave corgi, and Pewter, a little bit rotund, are there to make sure that nothing bad happens to their mistress Mary Minor Harristeen. Mary has a way to put her nose where it does not belong, but always solve the murder. She has her husband, a vet, Fair, and many friends to help her. Good reading.

Tiergeschichte mit liebevoller Schilderung interessanter Menschen unterschiedlicher Herkunft und Stellung im Leben, die das KLeinstadt-Lebens lebendig machen und die sehr facettenreich sind. Dazu gewährt es einen Einblick in die Südstaatenmentalität der USA.

Begonnen hat die Mrs. Murphy-Serie einmal als originelle Art, Krimis zu erzählen. Es gab zwei Erzählebenen, die der Menschen und die der Tiere. Hinzu kamen raffinierte Plots und glaubwürdige rote Fäden in den Nebenhandlungen: Die von ihrem fremdgehenden Ehemann Fair zutiefst verletzte Mary "Harry" Haristeen und Fairs Versuche, sie zurück zu gewinnen; Harrys Feindschaft mit ihrer Nebenbuhlerin Olivia "BoomBoom" Craycroft, oder die Versuche der hochnäsigen Society Queen Marilyn "Big Mim" Sanburne, die gesellschaftlichen Fäden in ihrer Hand zu behalten.Der Niedergang dieser einstmals so innovativen Serie kündigte sich schon bei Band 13 an ("Santa Clawed" ist Band 17): Da wurden in einer überstürzten Hau-Ruck-Aktion plötzlich alle Fäden der Nebenhandlungen zusammengeführt, und ab Band 14 war dann auch prompt alles zu glatt, was sich bis hin in den hier besprochenen Band auswirkt: Harry und Fair sind wieder verheiratet, von ihren früheren Problemen, die quasi auch ein Geschlechterkampf waren, keine Spur mehr; Harry ist plötzlich BoomBooms beste Freundin; Miranda Hogendobber ist glücklich mit ihrem zurückgekehrten High School-Beau, BoomBoom findet neues Liebesglück und so weiter. So wie in Band 14, 15 und 16 fehlen auch in "Santa Clawed" plötzlich alle Reibungspunkte, die früher Leben, Spannung und Abwechslung in die Nebenhandlungen gebracht haben. Auch die einstmals ironischen Seitenhiebe auf die penibel eingehaltenen Etikette der amerikanischen Südstaaten sind bisslos und lahm geworden. Statt dessen verliert sich Rita Mae Brown immer mehr in politischen Statements, die jedoch besser in ihre Gesellschaftromane wie "Bingo", "Rubyfruit Jungle" oder "Alma mater" passen, jedoch nicht in ihre Krimireihe. Außerdem sind Nebencharaktere, die früher Stammbesatzung gehörten, wie z. B. der Supermarktbesitzer Market Shiflett, ohne triftigen Grund aus der Serie verschwunden. Sie sind nicht etwa - wie z. B. noch in "Claws and effect" - als Mordopfer aus der Serie herausgeschrieben worden; nein, sie werden einfach nicht mehr erwähnt, und der Leser wird in seliger Unkenntnis gelassen, was aus ihnen geworden ist.Doch noch schlimmer ist, dass Rita Mae Brown ihre eigenen Plots plündert und quasi doppelt verwertet. Und das nicht zum ersten Mal: In Band 5 und 12 geht es um entführte Reitstallbesitzerinnen, die auf die selbe Art ermordet und deren Leichen auf dieselbe Art beseitigt wurden, und sogar das Mordmotiv ist das selbe. In Band 10 und 16 geht es um hohe Amtsträger aus Crozet, die auf tödliche Abwege geraten. Und in Band 13 und dem hier vorliegenden "Santa Clawed" stolpert Harry über ermordete Mönche - die obendrein beide aus demselben Orden stammen. "Santa Clawed" teilt sich noch weitere, dem Stammleser übel aufstoßende Doppelungen mit anderen Romanen; das Ganze wirkt, als wäre es aus misslungenen und daher nicht verwerteten Szenen der Vorgängerbücher inspirationsfrei zusammengeklöppelt worden.Die komplette Serie ist seit Band 14 nur noch als einfallslos zu titulieren, und auch bei "Santa Clawed" als Band 17 hat der Stammleser inzwischen die Hoffnung aufgegeben, dass sich mit jedem neuen Band noch einmal etwas positiv verändern würde. Mehr noch: Es beschleicht einen langsam das Gefühl, Rita Mae Brown erfüllt hier nur noch notgedrungen ihren Vertrag, weil sie sonst ihre Autorenvorschüsse zurückzahlen muss. Aber wirklich freuen kann man sich über die Mrs. Murphy-Krimis schon lange nicht mehr. Auch nicht auf "Santa Clawed". Schade.
