good for the right situation
UPDATE 4 years later:I've been replacing all of my CFLs with LED bulbs simply because they last forever and make a white rather than yellow light. CFLs do not do well in a sealed fixture (the kind that does not let air in to cool the bulb) and I have many of those. The cost of the change is about 50% more, but it pays for itself by not having to climb a ladder and replace the many sealed ceiling lights.ORIGINAL REVIEW:I use these little 13-watt bulbs in situations where I have large multiple bulb lights that are overwhelming with bigger bulbs, like fan lights and chandeliers. I also use them in places where you just need enough light to walk through a section, but don't need to see details... like the overhead in the dressing room before you get to the master bath... they help when you wake up in the night and just need light to get where you're going. I also use them in places where the light stays on 24/7... like one out by my walkway leading into the main entrance. I think it's just as cheap to run that one 24/7 than to try to put a timer or motion detector out there, and if I try to turn it on manually, I forget to turn it either on or off anyway, so this one is about a penny a day to use.But the new setup I've installed in the kitchen, with 5 of these over the countertop is supreme. They light the whole work area magnificently, without being too bright or too dim, and using only a total of 75 watts or so. I put an enerlite switch on it so they only come on when you are actually in that area, and you don't have to touch a switch with dirty hands or with your hands full... I'm extremely happy with this installation.Yes they are a little yellow in cast when only one is used, but for my multi-bulb installations they are exactly the right color. I recommend them only for these situations, because if you think this is going to be like a "real" 60-watt incandescent, you'll be disappointed. For a desk light or a reading light in bed, you'll feel like you're using a candle :)

Helped lower energy bill significantly.
A couple years ago I realized our summer electric cooling bill was somewhat artificially higher due to excessive heat being produced in our home between several older electronics, appliances, TVs and HOT LIGHT BULBS all generating excessive heat into our home that the AC then was having to then cool.In an effort to reduce our energy costs I thoroughly explored various low-cost options to fit within our tight budget to help reduce our costs. Ultimately I decided to first target our lighting sources and decided to give CFL bulbs a try. I bought a single pack and installed the bulbs in our most frequently used locations. Each month I then used the savings from our utilities and applied those savings to purchasing the next round of CFL bulbs. Within short order all our bulbs had been changed out, our home stayed cooler during the hot summer days which meant our AC unit was not running quite as often. Win-Win.Out of the numerous brands of CFL bulbs we tried, the GE 13 watt were by far the best quality. The GE bulbs are smaller and shorter than many other brands making them ideal for ceiling fans and fixtures there the covers will not allow the taller brands to be used. One pack of off-brand bulbs continuously burned out. The GE bulbs have remained reliable whether used upright, upside down or in ceiling fans - something other brands of CFL bulbs cannot claim. The packaging states these bulbs have a light output of 825 lumens at 13 watts equivalent to 60 watts with a life of 8000 hours - up to 8 times longer than many ordinary incandescent bulbs. The packaging also includes a chart showing the electricity cost savings using this CFL bulb as compared to using a standard incandescent bulb is $38 per bulb when the kilowatt hour rate is 10 cents and the savings is $23 per bulb at 6 cents per kilowatt hour. I like how the easy-open packaging holds each bulb snug and secure until ready to be used. These bulbs GE's customer service is 800-435-4448 8:00a-6:00p EST.I highly recommend and will indeed purchase again until the technology of the LED bulbs improve significantly.
