It works great out of the box. You can split any log with this and a 4 pound hand sledge. It really is witch wedge you want. I keep a HF wedge around in case it ever gets stuck.

I've been using this wedge for a few years. It does what it claims. (Unsurprising considering the name on it.) I still use other, plain wedges as well, because where I live, the wood we have, often one split takes 2 or even 3 wedges. Here's the thing: I use a Fiskars splitting maul and an old-fashioned, heavy, all-steel wide-head splitting maul. When they can do the job, I don't need a wedge. When I need a wedge, I find I reach for one of the plain wedges rather than this Estwing wedge first, and if that doesn't do the trick, add the Estwing. The Estwing does add a little spread, does split logs the others can't quite, but it's cumbersome; getting that little extra spread takes a little extra effort. That's not criticism, it's physics. No free lunch. I'm glad I have it in my split kit, but my experience is that its benefit is small compared to traditional steel wedges, while being a little more expensive and a little more hassle. Worth the difference? I'm not sure it is. As an additional tool, sure, but if I only had one wedge and one wedge were always enough, I don't think it would be this one.

Works. But, a little bit on the light side.

Love this. Used it with a 5lb sledgehammer to pry open some large butt rounds. The fins are good and the sharp driving edge is good, and my other cheaper wedges don’t have either of those things.

I used this splitting wedge along with one standard steel splitting wedge, a spiral steel spitting wedge, and an 8 lb. Estwing sledge to split some oak beams for a split rail fence. The standard wedge sticks in place better and more often, once it is driven into a log. This Estwing wedge bounces out of the split easily when it gets down to the "wings". HOWEVER! It works for the intended purpose of breaking appart the log/beam further apart because of those wings. Sure, sometimes I have to reset it into the gap for another strike in order to place another wedge further down the log , but it does well breaking apart stubborn wood fibers. Very happy with this chunk of steel.

I’ve been using this ESTWING Sure Split Wedge at home and it really makes splitting logs way easier. it’s got a solid forged steel build and the 1-7/8" edge cuts through wood smoothly. just a straightforward, helpful tool that gets the job done without any fuss. 🌲

Ik ben bezig met grote schijven (2m diameter) essenhout te verwerken (cf tennisracket-hout). Deze wig krijgt veel reclame maar is niet zo geschikt voor deze moeilijke taak met zeer flexibel hout. De wig gaat er moeilijk in en gaat er snel terug uit. In een reeds gemaakte scheur kan het wel nuttig zijn omdat de twee vleugels het hout goed uit elkaar duwen en ze zich niet snel vastsnijdt in het hout. Het is duidelijk dat voor het moeilijke werk de aluminium wiggen met scherpe rand en anti-terugslag randen superieur zijn. Voor zacht vers hout kan deze wig wel interessant zijn. Eén voordeel van het botte uiteinde is dat deze wig makkelijker in een bestaande scheur blijft en deze open splijt. De scherpe wiggen gaan soms in een bestaande scheur insnijden waar niet nodig. Uiteindelijk is deze wig toch een nuttige aanvulling op mijn scherpe aluminium wiggen. Maar voor moeilijk hout is dit niet de wig to go in de eerste plaats.

Bij mij werkt deze niet. Springt snel weer uit het hout bij het kloven. Helaas voor mij een miskoop. Ik heb vele andere wiggen die veel beter zijn.

Forget the diamond shaped splitters, that get jammed in the log, get one of these, they make short work of thick logs, a sharp end and plenty of area to hit, using a 4lb lump hammer. No jamming or metal chipping, a chisel made to last for years, good and solid. Not cheap, but it saves hours in chopping time and cleaning up the mess, due to good clean splits. I'd definitely recommend!
