Q: Is this one of those bags that is floppy, that is doesn't stand up well when empty/partially filled?

Yes it is floppy. It is also well constructed and should last several years. It is very reasonably priced and serves its purpose. I travel internationally for weeks at a time. I also travel stateside every 2-3 months for a week or so at a time. I can say it has served me well for my purposes.

Q: How do you wash these bags?

I would just wash it by hand. Its sturdy enough to put into a washer but I would fear that it would lose its shape. Its a great bag too.

Q: Can you fit a pair of shoes in there?

only if you mean kids shoes. Nobody in my family could fit a pair of shoes in this bag.
