Photography as Activism: Images for Social Change

Social Impact
This small (162 pages) book covers a lot of ground. It provides the authors thoughts, history of photographic activism, compelling interviews with current activist photographers, references and a section that provides additional resources. It felt just right that none of the photographers were apologetic about developing and following a passion; making images that promoted a particular point of view. They do not hesitate to "sell" their passion through their images and their writing.Although specific technique is not discussed, there are useful comments about the taking of such photographs and the ethics of taking and publishing these materials. "Photography as Activism: Images for Social Change" is a thought provoking book that incites conversation. I shared it with a young friend who also shared it with his photography teacher --- the result was a class discussion! You don't have to be a photographer or a journalist to value this book.

Can I give it 6 stars?
I have read this from cover to cover and now am starting over. I teach documentary photography and I found myself being so thankful to the author for finally putting into one book many of the ideas and concepts that I try to teach about how photography can change the world. I believe that with infinite depth, and the author obviously does too, as well as the photographers she interviews or highlights. It isn't sugar coated, but it is meant to get people thinking... and that it does! I am going to be using it as a textbook next year!

Well recommended book on social activism and photography
In "Photography as Activism", Bogre provides a well rounded perspective on the use of photography for social change. The book includes an early to modern history of the medium as used for activism, a discussion of the challenges faced by photographers pursuing this work, and interviews with contemporary photographers working for social change. This seems to be one of the few books available with stunning contemporary examples of activist photography and interviews with the photographers themselves. It is a well recommended book for anyone wanting to learn more about documentary photography used for social activism.

Misleading and inaccurate description
Misleading and inaccurate description. Ansel Adams? Robert Glenn Ketchum ? I did not see one reference to either photographer in the book and how their photography is used for activism. Strictly conflict and human rights photography coverage with graphic and disturbing imagery. Even if I was considering conflict photography, there was no useful information on how to get started β only interviews with other photographers.

Good content but the font and design must be seriously improved.
Don't buy the paper format. The kindle version is much easier to read.I initially bought the paper format but the font and impression is in light grey, which is very difficult to read. I even tried to read it under a spotlight with sun glasses on, but started to get some migraines. So I gave up and bought the kindle version.Such a shame as the content is actually good and informative.

Great content, slightly unusual layout and construction
This is a great book. The content is, I'm sure, very good. It's the production that I find a bit odd. The page layouts have a slightly unusual text displacement which makes it slightly hard to follow with the eye, and the cover is very flimsy, making it quite hard to read other than on a desk. Strange really. If it had been self-published, I could understand, but this isn't.

Text hard to read
I am very interested in this book and topic but Iβm finding it very hard to read as the text is presented in a very light, fine font and it is in grey as straining my eyes. Iβm not visually impaired so it must be impossible to read if you have any visibility issues. Not good from a accessibility point of view for a book about changing the world.

Really good read
I really liked this book as it highlights issues that we are facing in the world today. It's not just a book for photographers, anyone can read this book who pays attention to violence that we are facing around the world today.
