what are dimensions of this item

I purchased this grate a few months ago. The dimensions of the part that drops into the floor are roughly 2 1/2" wide, 9 3/4" long. The outside dimensions of the brass cover are 3 5/8" by 11". It drops into the floor about 1.5". Hope that helps.

what is the material?

The grille is steel with plated rubbed bronze finished. The damper box is made of plastic.

What is the dimension of the black plastic part that fits into the duct? Home Depot’s dimensions are off on another size. We need correct info.

I bought a 4x8, because Lowes did not have that size in a nice looking grate. The plastic part is the part that fits the hole, it's 8"!! The width is the 4!! Hope that helps!!

If this is 4-inch by 12-inch, how can it be 11.5-inch in length? Is this a misprint? Isn't it suppose to be 13.5-inch in length?

It is a misprint. The opeining in the floor wall or ceiling is 4-inch by 12-inch. The length of the grille that is visible after installation is 13.5 inches.
