Ceramic Catalytic Combustor for Vermont Castings Intrepid and Small Winter Warm Insert Wood Stoves CC-251

I've given this catalytic combustor 5 stars only on the basis of it appearing to be exactly the same product I have bought from my wood stove shop in the past. I won't be able to give it a real evaluation until I start using it next winter. I have to clean my stove and my chimney and repair all the seals before I insert the combustor, and I won't do that until summer arrives.The product looks exactly the same as what I bought a few years ago from Vermont Castings, but with this offer I got two combustors for less than the price of one.

Condor has been the name in Cats for a while and this one is no exception. A new twist is that they also send a gasket to go around the cat to give it a tighter fit.They are well made and can be cleaned at the end of the season.

These catalytic devices are used on some wood stoves and inserts, to control smoke emissions and gain additional heat from the wood burned. Like most catalytic devices, they have a finite life -- depending upon how much wood one burns - but 3 to 5 years seems the norm. This unit was the third in my Winterwarm Small fireplace insert, made by Vermont Castings. Like others, it consists of a ceramic core plated with a micron thickness of platinum (the catalyst) and it must be heated to 500 degrees or so prior to being switched into the flue gas stream by means of a stove damper - at which point the amount of visible smoke leaving your chimney should decrease. The unit is not hard to replace and seemed to fit the space properly. I have no reason to believe it won't last the typical 4 years in my application - but Condar does provide some guidance on replacement intervals, which are packed with the combustor.
