This 1929 novel now reads like a period piece, but it is still fascinating as one of the earliest examples of the hard-boiled school of crime fiction. It is a thinly-veiled account of the rise of Al Capone, written at the time when Capone was about to meet his nemesis in the form of Eliot Ness and the 'Untouchables'. The depiction of dialogue and action is somewhat brief and unconvincing, and the portrayal of minor characters is superficial, but it pulls no punches in regard to the corrupting effect of mob money on the police and municipal authorities.This novel was the source for the 1932 Paul Muni film, which in turn was the inspiration for the 1983 Al Pacino version; however, don't expect to find the brutality of the latter in these pages. It's a relatively genteel read, even though it may have shocked the readers of its day. It's roughly half way between Sherlock Holmes and 'No Orchids for Miss Blandish'; and, despite the blurb on the back cover, there's no 'whirlwind of cocaine'. Nothing stronger than bootleg Canadian Club.

This book reads like it was written by a six-year-old. Try and keep count of the use of the word "retorted".

Passionnant à lire. Se lit aisément d'une traite, écriture fluide et agréable agrémenté de vocabulaires particuliers au milieu,. Si l'emploi du temps ne permet pas une lecture d'une seule traite, le livre peut se lire aisément de manière interrompue car il y a de fréquents et brefs rappels des situations et des personnages. J'ai acheté ce livre par curiosité après avoir regardé le film "Scarface" avec Al Pacino puis le film original "Scarface" avec Paul Muni. C'est très intéressant. Le fil conducteur de l'histoire est le même mais elle est racontée bien différemment dans chacune des trois versions.

Si vous avez déjà le vu le film, ne vous attendez pas à une copie conforme dans sa version livre. C'est le principe de l'adaptation. Par contre, si vous avez aimé le film, vous aimerez le livre. Bien dans son jus gangsteresque, on ne s'ennuie pas. Je recommande aux fans du genre.
