Finally, some detachment from the cliche anime world.
The story begins with both Hagi and Saya traveling to the city named Petrograd (St. Petersburg), in 1916, just before the Russian Revolution.Hiding their true intentions (to continue fighting the spread of chiropterans), the two disguise themselves as the new cellists for the Czar's chamber orchestra. In the meantime, Saya befriends a young girl named Claudia who seeks treatment for her illness from Father Grigori, better known as Rasputin. Grigori's main reason to stay at the palace is to "aid" the sickly Alexi Romanov, the heir to the throne. Receiving a letter she thinks is from the Red Shield, Saya is ordered to kill Claudia, assuming she is a chiropteran.Later learning that the seal on the letter had fooled Saya into thinking it was from Bordeaux, she has other problems to deal with. Receiving another letter, Saya is ordered to kill Kisku's twin brother Kiska. Kisku is one of the members of the chamber orchestra Saya had met.Little does Saya know, Hagi had fallen into a trap which leads to his capture. With Hagi being captured by Grigori, who reveals himself as one of Diva's chevalier, Grigori finally kills Kiska, saying that the mistakes must be gotten rid of.Becoming worried about Hagi, she continues to search for him. In the meantime, she meets up with David, a member of the Red Shield. Informing her that the previous letters had been fake, she learns that she was drawn in to kill a human, Claudia. During this time, the readers learn that Anastasia, the youngest Grand Duchess, is Diva in disguise. Soon after, Saya learns that Claudia had in fact lived, but is now turning into a chiropteran.Convinced that Hagi may be able to better aid Saya as her chevalier, the volume closes with him helping Grigori with some sort of ceremony. The personalities of the original characters (Saya and Hagi) are kept mostly intact other than Hagi's more caring personality. He's a little more sensitive than reclusive in this one.In my opinion, the art of this mini series is a little more favorable for me than the 5 volume series illustrated by Katsura Asuka. However, my favorite so far is the art in "Blood+: Kowloon Nights" (originally Yakoujoushi) which is yet to be published.Having detached myself from manga and anime so much, (mainly due to the declining level of maturity in the various series themselves) I can appreciate this series more and more in an anime world focused on school girls and ninjas. I would suggest this book to anyone interested in Blood+ in particular. However, new readers may be slightly confused with the existing story line. Any one who is looking for a more mature story line and detachment from the cliche anime world would most likely like this mini series.(Now, if only Dark Horse would be more responsible and publish the rest of the novels like "Blood+ Volume 4: Nankurunaisa" and the "Russian Rose" series when they intended to)

I Wish It Was Canon!
I love the Blood+ series and had the anime, light novels etc. Of all the manga made for the series this one is my favorite! Beautifully done with the music analogy and the emotions Saya and Hagi display. I only wish this was the official version of their time in Russia. The series itself doesn't really go into that period of time so I use this manga as filler for what happened before they met Sonya. There is just so much emotion between the two of them, and it also reviews "the promise" and Hagi's feelings about it all. WONDERFUL!!!! This is some of what I was looking for in the light novels and didn't get, so I am DOUBLY glad that this manga exists and that I got the chance to read it. I highly recommend it to Blood+ fans, especially if you love to see Saya and Hagi together. The writer explains his title choice and, having taken Music 110, I can finally understand just what he meant. For those that don't know, when music is played in 'adagio' it is a slow, steady and kind of regal/stately tempo. To me the name reflects their relationship throughout the entire series and not just in this manga. I could continue but I do not want to spoil the joy of reading it all yourself. Enjoy!

Loved it
As an avid fan of Blood+, I was excited to own this manga. It gives you a bit more hindsight into what Hagi and Saya's lives were like before Okinawa. It's not essential to read this book, but it is well worth it if you're a real fan. The artwork is beautiful and the story worth the read.
