I've been teaching art for a couple decades. The art books most districts buy are hot garbage. They never really include "projects" so much as fluff. I've long relied on commercial material to teach actual skills, because, in the end, art is something you do more than it is something you read about.This book, and its sister, Draw Alphabeasts, show budding artists how to build memorable characters using a time-proven and effective step-by-step method. The particular appeal for these two books is that everything builds off the foundation of a number or letter form familiar to younger and older artists alike. The steps are always spot-on. The author does not jump unnaturally through a drawing as many lesser "how-to-draw" books often do. My students are always delighted with their creations.Some characters are more sophisticated than others, so both books feature a range of difficulties befitting a range of ages and talents. What some might not realize is that some of the final, colored images may point toward details and techniques suited to advanced learners, or to multiple renderings of the same character.Aside from kids, these two books have a unique appeal for anyone interested in cartooning and the bold, edgy aesthetic so popular today.
