SUIZAN Ryoba Double Edge Saw 240mm - Professional Japanese Pullsaw Handsaw Woodworking Tools

I’ve purchased a few pull saws over the years and this one is the best quality for the money. The handle is comfortable hand wrapped in rattan and shaped with a slightly thinner middle section to improve grip. Extremely secure blade with great versatility of rip and cross cut on either side. The most important thing to me is the retention of sharpness. This is achieved here with high quality metal and the perfect angle of cut on the teeth on this saw. This saw can cut through wood extremely quickly, but I’d recommend taking a little longer and preventing the blade from bending. When it comes to flush cutting this is capable but I’d recommend a smaller blade if your flush cutting a lot of work. Like many keen woodworkers I have adopted Japanese pull saws into my work because they are simply excellent at certain tasks, the main one being that you can cut very thin kerfs and thus if you have a steady hand get very accurate cuts. I've a few of these ryoba type saws but this is the first actual made in Japan one I've got and whilst perhaps not a huge leap over the rest it does have a more 'Japanese' feel to it. Maybe that's just me buying into the whole craftsman thing but if it works, it works. The saw itself is very well made with a super thin steel and fine razor sharp teeth. The crosscut side is very fine - which I like, and the rip saw side isn't too aggressive making a slower but more accurate job. handle is as normal for these things and if you have only ever used western style saws might take a bit of time to get used to. If I have one critical comment is that there is no hole drilled in the handle nor cut out in the blade to hang the saw up which is my preference. Overall a very good saw indeed for fine woodworking.

I bought this 240mm pull saw from Suizan and the 120mm. My review for both is the same. WOW! I have the normal range of hand and power saws at home but am reaching more and more for these pull saws for even general cross cuts. I'll mark a pencil line to saw along then find the pull saw follows this easily and the cut is no wider than the thin pencil line. I'll probably end up blunting the blades faster - because I also use it to cut plywood - but I'll happily buy replacements because of the quality of cut and speed of use. The blades are quite flimsy but this is not a problem as long as you remember to put the main effort on the pull and not the push stroke.

I grew up exclusively using western style saws and didn't know any different. Having seen a number of people on social media saying how good these Japanese style saws are, I decided to give one a try. The Suizan brand seemed to be particularly well respected for quality vs price so went for this particular 'general purpose' saw. Wow. It cuts like butter and with minimal effort, cuts dead straight and with a fine kerf. Not only that, but with cross-cut teeth on one side of the blade and rip-cut teeth on the other it is actually two saws in one. Both work equally well. It is so easy to use I ended up doing some smaller, finer projects with it and I reckon it even outperformed my brass backed tenon saw. After a few weeks use I ended up buying the smaller Dozuki style saw specifically for finer carpentry, and the small flush-cut saw for cutting dowel plugs and mitre splines. My western saws are gathering dust now.

I've never used a Japanese saw previously, so this was a first for me. It does cut well and precisely and, after some practice, I've found it to be a really good saw. My only negative feelings on it are the effectiveness of of the blade/handle connection. I do not seem to be able to stop the blade from rotating out of alignment with the handle from time to time, despite tightly bolting it. Perhaps it's just me?

Amazing saw and a great addition to my tools, if you havnt used pull saws before watch some videos, us it and you will be a convert.

This saw has one of the thinnest blades on the market. Why is that important.....much less effort required to cut hardwood as the kerf is around half what a conventional western saw produces, add to that the aggressive teeth and you have a saw that cuts very fast with minimal effort.

This saw is great for large-scale joinery, I used this to cut half laps into a 2x4, I needed something that could cut quite deep but have a fine finish. The saw was very accurate and didn't flex, It's easy to establish an initial groove with the cross-cut side and then switch to the rip-cut side when doing rip cuts. One minor downside, the wrapped handle has a tendancy to flake off but doesn't effect the effectiveness of the saw.

I don't often do the review thing but, after a few months of using this saw I figured it was time to say something. 2.5 stars would be more accurate than 3 stars but Amazon doesn't do half stars. The saw is decent for the price but, I do have problems with the fit and finish, the blade holder being off centre and angled from the handle is the main issue. Today the blade holder managed to come loose from the handle when I was ripping down some cherry wood, I've glued it back in but no idea if it will hold. Other than that, yeah, this is a fine saw and, if you're using it for light work I'd highly recommend it.

Il s'agit de ma 2eme ryoba, j'aime sa coupe et son long manche bien relié. Par contre j'ai vite perdu deux dents par rapport à ma 1ere ryoba. Je valide néanmoins l'achat.
