Let Us Prey (A Dead Cold Mystery Book 4)

Not up to the standards set by the first three books
I would swear that this book was written by someone other than the author of the earlier books. Stone and Dehan act totally out of character throughout the book and the police work is sloppy bordering on incompetent. Stone has never been sloppy nor incompetent. And Dehan comes off as a harpy. In fact in an irritating development she has gotten dumber and more annoying with each book.Additionally there are so many mistakes and sloppy errors in the book I have to wonder if anyone proofread it or if there were any editors or beta readers. After reading the author note at the end about how fast the author churns our books I am beginning to see why that might be possible. No care is taken with research or editing. Iโm so disappointed as I really enjoyed the first book but the quality has diminished with each subsequent book Iโve read. Iโm debating whether to continue reading in hopes of improvement or throw in the towel.

Interesting!
A nice plot and two great main characters. This is a fast paced action packed thriller that keeps you on the edge.

Over Used Plot Device Ruins Book
I loathe when writers use the plot twist of the hero being drugged, kidnapped and miraculously rescued. It strains ones ability to give any credence to a plot line when the lead character, who is supposedly brilliant and intuitive in unfolding aspects of an investigation, allows himself to be ruffied by his nemesis.First he agrees to meet with the bad guy with no back up and then drinks the poisoned scotch from the ruthless killer. Hard to be brilliant and stupid at the same time. I love this series but this book is a miss for me

..."which bits were true and which bits were lies"...
When a second rate private investigator (Karl Baxter) from the Bronx wants the file on a cold case that NYPD Detectives John Stone and Carmen Dehan had not considered reviewing, they decide to give it another look... Why is Baxter interested in a case where a petty criminal was beaten and shot? Who are Geronimo dos Santos and Tamara Gunthersen? What was the mysterious gig in 2015 that both of them were involved in? Will Stone's and Dehan's partnership withstand the strain of this case? The fourth instalment of the Dead Cold Mysteries series does not disappoint. Stone and Dehan are great partners and work well together when solving cold cases. What I really like about these books is that I can never figure out the complete mystery before the big reveal โ I can figure out parts of the story, but not all of it. There are enough twists, turns and surprises to keep me guessing until the end โ I did not see this one coming!AfterThought: Errors/Typos/Mistakes continue in this series. For example, while Stone and Dehan are riding around in a Mustang convertible, the author wrote, "I put the hood down, and the wind started whipping Dehanโs hair about." It should read: I put the top down โ hopefully, the hood is always down while the car is moving (this is only one example)...

Let Us Prey (A Dead Cold Mystery Book 4)
Welp! That is an understatement because this story has so many twists. But, I knew who was the culprit all along. Dual personality or not...lol.Read 6/4/2022.

Meh
Not as good as usual. Plot was thin and characters were transparent. And, of course, the author trying way to hard to sound American but failing miserably by using expressions that are uniquely British. "Air con" said no American ever when referring to A/C.

Great series
Another excellent entry in this entertaining series. Banner has a really good thing going here in the partnership between Stone and Dehan, platonic so far, but constantly teetering on the edge of becoming a relationship. They work well together and their dialogue is always amusing. Each book introduces us to a new cold case. The case may be cold and old, but once our intrepid duo start looking into it new murders pop up all over the place. There's a clever twist which I was beginning to suspect shortly before it happened. This is all packed tightly into just over 200 pages. Well done Mr Banner. Another winner and I still have so many to read:)

The Best Book So Far In This Excellent Series
This is the fourth book in this excellent series. Brilliant, development of the main characters is coming to the surface as the exploits in this unfolds to be their best adventure so far.Following up interest from a private investigator into a cold case which is on their โTo do not got around to it yetโ list. NYPD Detective's John Stone and Carmen Dehan latest investigation involves a homicide from two years ago. Sometime in 2015. The individual in question, was known to the police. The victim was found in his own home. But another corpse was supposedly there? However, no remains were found. This was believed to be a young actress called Tamara Gunterhersen. She was not from New York. She had a home in San Francisco, California, with a healthy bank account. So what was a nice girl like that, doing in the Bronx?

Highly recommended.
This is the fourth book about this 'dynamic' duo, and their characters are developing well, as is Blake Banner's skill as an crime author. I find much of the US crime fiction a bit laborious, but these stories fly along. Starting the series from book 1 will introduce you to the characters and give you an insight into their quirks, but taking this book as a one-off is highly recommended and will leave you wanting more.

An excellent new author
I discovered Blake Banner about three months ago and have since gone through the 'Dead Cold' series like a dose of salts.Eminently readable with clever plotting and a most interesting dynamic between Stone & Dehan, I have enjoyed every one and sincerely hope Mr Banner continues this series.
