Quiet until you get to 50% Volume, then it's fantastically loud!
TLDR: It's a fantastic little speaker for the price! Perfect if your laptop or phone speaker just isn't cutting it. Long Version: I needed something for listening to music or watching youtube videos as I'm cooking or cleaning. My phone and laptop just can barely keep up as I move around cooking or cleaning a few feet away. This speaker is great for filling the house with volume! While I try not to push speakers and amps much past 50% volume, to avoid overwhelming or over heating them. The volume of the Sony XB13 remains gentle and quiet until you get to 50% volume. Then it scales up rapidly just like you see in the Rting review. At first, I thought it was extremely quiet compared to the JBL Go 3. It was only after writing my first review, I decided to investigate the Rting's spec sheets. I couldn't understand that the Sony was within 1 DB of peak loudness with the Go 3 when it felt a quarter as loud. After pushing it to pushing it to 70-80% volume, I discovered that the loudness scales up exponentially to it's peak. It filled the entire house with sound at 70%, just as I had hoped for. This design of exponentially increasing volume is actually brilliant, because you can finely set the volume when you need it to be quiet. Then you can still get it loud and clear when you need it as well! Quite brilliant in my opinion. It really took me a while to appreciate this thing, now I love it! It's a fantastic little speaker if you can get one on sale for around $40! Almost unbeatable in this price range when you consider the price of buying speakers with an amp.

Great little speaker it's a Sony of course it's gotta be good
Great little speaker it's a Sony of course it's gotta be good. I have used Sony items for years they and Bose are my go to's for sound and in this case I was definitely looking for a unique fit, form and function for my specific need which was to put a little speaker into a water bottle holder on my road bike for extended rides and music enjoyment. As many should and will know is that wearing earpieces or headphones is a violation of motor vehicle code as well as biking laws as well. if you can't hear what's around you you obviously become more dangerous to yourself and others on the roadways so this was my fix. Overall this little speaker is just about the circumference of a standard polar water bottle which fits into a standard adjustable bottle cage that mounts to your bike frame. It's a little tight however I would recommend getting the silicone rubber protector and putting it on the device to keep it from getting scratched up and to also to keep it from vibrating against the cage with lower frequency base depending on what your musical tastes are. So far I've done about 20 miles with it and there are no hiccups, stays secure and it definitely produces enough sound that even with the external noises of the roadway around you can be heard clearly and cleanly which is the intent of my needs. The unit charges up fairly quickly with a USB-C connector and the base is manageable for its size. I had several different units I compared it against including the XB 23 and the Bose mini and it sounded very respectable against those and of course the case definitely met my needs on the bike. I would highly recommend the speaker we all have several Bluetooth speakers probably in our collections many or shaped rectangular summer round summer circular this one was perfect because it was the size and circumference of a small water bottle which fits everyone's bike water cage. Hopefully I've helped you today if you two were looking for something to take your tunes with out on the road when I connect to my Amazon music or iTunes the sound is more than plentiful for my needs.

Tiny and cool
Good bass sound. Pairs easily with Bluetooth devices. It is tiny but that’s not a problem.

The Sony "It's Okaaayyyyy Extra Bass" ~
Size/Portability -5- When the speaker arrived I was a little surprised by the small size of it, I would say it's about the same size in height as an average person's palm. So it's very easy to grip and handle without the little lanyard attached to it. Aesthetically it's very pleasing as well. Sound -3.7- The most important feature of course, why else buy this if the sound is not good. Although Sony claims that the speaker has extra bass. I would say it does relatively okaayyyyy for it's bass quality. Of course it doesn't have the same moving effect a larger speaker would have, but it still manages to capture that essence from songs and movies. Whenever I test the quality of a speaker, I use the trailers of the Lord of The Rings because they have a wide range of sounds, music, bass, voices, etc. Battery -5- The speaker has a very good battery life. What more to say? All in All, I would recommend this speaker to anyone who is looking for something compact, convenient, reliable, and budget friendly. I was able to get it refurbished for 28 bucks and works perfectly. I would rank it slightly under the Bose mini speaker.

Battery sucks
I’ve had this for a year and a half and I have not been fully happy with it since day one. Battery does not last long. Instead of letting you know the battery is low, it just automatically disconnects and you have to sit there constantly connecting back to it to give you a few more hours of play time (because it still has several hours of battery life). So I don’t understand that feature and it gets really irritating when you’ve used the speaker for a day and by the second day, it’s already dying. Quality of sound is ok. It sounds a tiny bit muffled but it’s not a big enough difference to tell right away. I have had way better off brand speakers than this. Sony, quite a bit disappointing with this one.

One Sony SRS-XB13 is superb. Two are moreso.
I bought two of these as a gift for a good friend, and we have tested them extensively on his screened-in back porch. We tested them both individually and also paired to play Pandora in stereo from a mid-tier Moto G Stylus smartphone. I have owned several excellent Sony audio products over many decades - from budget to ES level. The SRS-XB13 is a new favorite Sony product of mine. Flossy Carter on YouTube, one of my most reliable go-to reviewers, did a comparison of the Sony XB13 and its most direct competitor, the JBL Clip 4. Flossy included a side-by-side sound demo that I listened to with my Sennheiser HD 600 headphones. Flossy gave the edge to the Sony XB13. Now, having personally heard and tested them, I agree with Flossy Carter about how good the XB13 sounds, especially when paired in a stereo bluetooth link, which is easy to do, once you get the hang of it. Either way, solo or paired, you will get good, balanced high-fidelity sound with reasonably deep and even bass, clear midrange, and nice treble in a smooth and balanced, dynamic presentation with ample loudness. They do not sound cheap or tinny, at all. They sound really great with surprising richness and clarity at all volume levels. In single or stereo use a few feet away, we cannot carry on a normal conversation with the volume set anywhere over 50%. No, these will not replicate the gut-shaking, window-rattling volume of other more expensive and more powerful "party" speakers and boom boxes. These are just not meant for that. They are simply great for some semi-quiet to moderately loud or reasonably loud, nice quality music listening you can enjoy indoors or outdoors, perhaps on your back porch or patio while chilling out to your favorites - without having neighbors calling the police on you. I guarantee that you will find it very difficult to believe how truly good, rich, clear, dynamic, and balanced these little marvels from Sony sound, especially in a stereo pair. Aside from Siri and Google Assist and an IP67 water and dustproof rating, a big bonus is long battery life, I believe up to 16 hours at less than 50% volume and about 5 hours with volume over around 80%. They will very pleasantly surprise you and have you shaking your head in disbelief, especially when paired in stereo. I highly recommend one or two, especially while Sony is still making them, probably at a low profit margin.

Love it!
Small, tastefully designed, easily removable strap so I can have it on my desk. I was hesitant about black, but it looks sharp and good quality. Sound quality is great. Overall super happy! I tried some obscure brands before getting this one but they had issues with bluetooth connectivity, and frankly looked not that great, finally decided to go back to sony, I’m happy I did. Quality is quality!

Decent sound, but...
The lack of an aux port as compared to the previous (now harder to buy) iteration is a major flaw for this product. For what it's worth, it's definitely able to take a few hard knocks. The lanyard strap came undone whilst hanging off a sling bag, when descending the stairs, causing the speaker to take a tumble onto the hard concrete stairs. Apart from that permanent nick, and some dust, the speaker was unaffected. This speaker does not have "low latency", due to the Bluetooth profiles it supports, nor a low latency mode.
