Doesn't work as advertised - avoid
I bought this to extract ARC from a feed to an old home theater system which is controlled over CEC but receives audio via Optical. This device is advertised as passing through CEC while extracting ARC - this is not the case. No CEC commands pass through, making the device useless.

Does what it says on the Tin.
I got the Avantree HAX04 to provide dolby digital 5.1 sound for a Panasonic TV (GT30), a Marantz SR4200 amp with sources like TV, Cable, Fire Stick (Gen 3). I chose the HAX04 because other HDMI Splitter suppliers did not have brand name or reliability records, The HAX04 does what it says on the Tin and is so far reliable (1 month). The mistake I made is for your sound system to work, both the source and components need to work together. The biggest let down is the TV which did not transmit HDMI dolby digital over either the TV's SPDIF or ARC. So I can only do one source at time a time using the HAX04. But I also learnt most sources are stereo and the Pro Logic II setting on the Amp can create a pseudo 5.1 sound.

Do not buy this it does not work
Rubbish not fit for purpose doesn't work. Waste of money. The supplier contacted me I told them that I just purchased another branded device which works perfectly. They feel that is resolved no talk of fixing or refund. Please don't waste your time and money. Seller has automated responses still waiting on my refund honestly don't waste time or money with this seller.

Useless
Tried with several sources and several sets of cables. Flickers screen to the point of being worried the TV might die. No sound on analog outputs other than loud buzz. Waste of time and money.

Great idea if your having trouble.
I bought this because when I try casting thro my chromecast, I got no sound from my amplifier and speakers, if I used the output on the TV (HD, but old, using RCA leads) and watched freeview, it was OK, but as soon as I cast in any way, I got nothing. This unit works well, but doesn't come with any leads, so I needed a hdmi and RCA leads. Easy to install, power in, chromecast or other device in and hdmi or RCA out, it doesn't seem to matter what setting its on, even ARC, it just plays sound and picture. The only thing I don't like is, if I'm casting from something like netflix but decide to use another casting app, I get no sound, I have to turn everything off for a few mins and start again, but to be honest, it doesn't really bother me. I actually plug the usb power cord into my ps3 charger station because as usual, all these types of units these days come with the smallest USB cable they can get and it's not a phone type connector so you either pay more money out for a new lead or do the best ya can. I was worried about the ARC connection, but everything still works even thou my equipment doesn't support it or even have an optical audio output. So all in all, it does exactly what I want it to do.

This worked very well and was very easy to set up. I use it to extract audio from the television's ARC HDMI connection to a Bluetooth transmitter. This enables me to hear the television audio directly through my Bluetooth-enabled hearing aids. The Avantree HAX04 Support Page on the Internet provides very clear instructions, both graphic and video, for setting up the device and connections.

I needed to hook up Philips hearing aids from Costco. Their hearing aids have their own proprietary Bluetooth system, so I needed to use their transmitter. Because my TV is wall mounted, I had limited access to cables and have an A/V unit with no audio outputs. I called Avantree and they were able to look up my A/V unit and recommend the HAX04 audio stripper. (Excellent customer service). The unit was inserted between my cable box and A/V unit and basically worked fine. The only problem I had was when I fast forwarded a recorded program (I have Xfinity--possibility just a quirk in my setup), the signal would drop and the TV would have to reboot. To solve this problem, I used an HDMI splitter (I used a powered one from another company). I have one arm of the splitter going to the inputs of my A/V system to maintain connectivity. The other arm of the splitter goes to the HAX04 which goes to the Philips Bluetooth transmitter. System has been working for about two months now with no problem.
