The sum of the parts was less than the kit.
This is a rugged built set of support brackets that will more than carry what it’s to do.I needed to vent my 8” wood stove out the ceiling and was looking at the Selkirk 208621 8T-PCK kit. The best price I could find was about 230 bucks with shipping. I had just installed my 6” stove with a Selkirk 206621 6T-PCK so I know they’re a quality kit but after paying about 150 bucks for it I was feeling the price pain for going up to the next size and paying nearly 100 bucks more it. My stove was vented directly through the wall to a masonry chimney with a thimble that connected to the stove with only a 90-degree elbow. That made keeping the smoke out all but impossible because I couldn’t get a good draft. I moved the thimble up as high as I could on the wall but the additional few feet wasn’t enough and I had to add an inline electric draft inducer. My 6” stove goes straight up and there’s never a smoke issue because the pipe heats quickly and creates a great draft… so I knew that’s what I needed for the Blaze King. Since it was already vented I had some of the parts that were included in the kit like the cap, double wall stainless pipe and the storm collar. All I needed was the support kit, ceiling plate, trim collar and adapter to go from double wall to black pipe. All four of these items were purchased for about 90 bucks. I didn’t need the roof support bracket already installed on a short length of double wall pipe since I already had 3 lengths of 4-foot pipe. By just getting the roof support hardware I could attach it to my existing pipe and since my sloped ceiling is about 10” thick I couldn’t use the short piece in the kit anyway. The inside adapter to black pipe is about 50 bucks but it’s not really needed because you can easily screw on some single wall black pipe to it and that usually runs about 10 bucks for a 4-foot length. Anyway, purchasing just the parts I needed was a great cost savings but you have to check prices here and on that auction site by using both the item number and then the product number… as an example, search first for 208621 and then 8T-PCK. I did find a hardware store in Arkansas that had the kit for about 240 bucks with shipping. If you don’t have any parts of your own the complete kit will be less than the sum of all the parts. So, for what I saved it was like getting that expensive flashing kit free… and enough left over to even replace my cheap cap if needed. The Selkirk cap that came with my 6” kit does a very nice job of reducing down-drafts from the high winds we get here and my cheap cap on the 8” doesn’t do a thing to help so I will likely replace it and that’s not a place I should have gone cheap on in the first place. Remember to always finish off your piping with 3-screws at each joint. Lastly, and for those who may not know, pipe is measured by the inside diameter so anything marked 8” that is used on double wall pipe will be about 10” in diameter if it’s made to slip over a double wall pipe… like a ceiling plate or a black pipe adapter… and especially the flashing so it’s pretty easy to get the wrong part.
