ARRMA 1/10 Typhon 4X4 V3 MEGA 550 Brushed Buggy RC Truck RTR (Transmitter, Receiver, NiMH Battery and Charger Included), Green, ARA4206V3

I’ve had this for about a month now and my first impressions were good, it handles great, the suspension works great and feels nice on all surfaces, the plastics are all of high quality and the overall experience and build quality is good, but it is deathly slow with the stock setup, so I went with a 3660 brushless and 120a esc that cost me around $70 and that’s when the flaws of this thing really come out. First they make it sound like this is just a Typhon 3s with a brushed motor, it is not. The 3s uses a completely different slipper clutch and 32p spur and pinion which they want you to shell out about $60 for, meanwhile similar slipper setups for traxxas and other vehicles can be had for under $20. The 3s also has a center driveshaft brace, that’s another $12. Now instead of the slipper I went with a steel 48p spur and a specialty 5mm 48p Robinson pinion for $30 total, which is ok so far but it’s not the better slipper setup of the 3s still. After all these upgrades which puts me at more than the 3s, I blow the differential input and crown gear and find out that’s a common weak point of these, and in order to get steel differentials, like a lot of other higher end hobby vehicles come with stock, you need to shell out another $75 for their steel differential and then another $20 for the steel input shaft, and that’s only for rear steel differential… Other things not on the mega are the steel motor mount, that’s another $20, adjustable turnbuckles (the stock ones get loose easily, not sure if the better turnbuckles fix this), another $30, a better servo, another $50, and the heatsink/fan.So to sum up the list of things the 3s comes with this does not;Center driveshaft brace and bearing $12Metal motor mount assembly with heat sink and fan $25 on ebayBetter slipper/32p spur assembly and 32p pinion $60Adjustable better turnbuckles $30Better servo $50Brushless setup $100 (splitting the difference between the spektrum and commonly had Amazon/eBay brushless setups)That’s $277 worth of upgrades (even taking into account some discounted parts from rtr tear downs like the motor mount and heatsink) in order to have an equivalent Typhon 3s that’s only $100 more, that is absurd to me.Anyways, all in all I like the car, it goes good and with a modest brushless setup geared for about 40mph you probably don’t need to upgrade too much, but if I had to do this again, it would make MUCH more sense to just buy the 3s version with the tougher gears, the brushless setup already installed, the center brace and motor mount and better turnbuckles. These are just the things I’ve found out about too, there could be other things.If they didn’t downgrade all these things, and genuinely gave you the 3s chassis with just a brushless setup, it would be worth it, but with all the downgrades that you need to go and buy to make this a true brushless system (which everyone is going to want to do, this is just too big of a car for any brushed setup) it is not really worth the money compared to the 3s version, assuming both are on sale/same discount or lack thereof.This would be good for a kid just getting into the hobby with no plans on going brushless, or planning on a 3550 3s brushless setup slightly faster than brushed, but for anyone who knows they’re gonna want something at least as fast as the 3s version the upgrade path of this thing is just not worth it, go for the 3s or find something in the 1/10th class.

am a 75 yo kid:) raced on road back in the mid 90's. me and a neighbor are tearing up the back yards. over all car seems well worth the cost. added a 17 tooth pinion and smoked my buddy lol. next upgrade will be in the steering. howing fun again!!!!

So at first I wasn’t exactly blown away by the mega, granted my grass hadn’t been cut so it was working harder than I originally gave it credit for. It absolutely had zero issues conquering my yard, albeit maybe a bit slower than I would have liked not sure what I was expecting but you get the point. Other than the expected drag and minor friction of an unkempt yard it was flying, once I took it to the asphalt parking lot and really opened it up I was pleasantly surprised. If I had to call it I would say 20+ mph maybe closer to 23ish out of the box. I definitely would have gone for the 3s, but for around $100 you can convert it yourself with very little effort. Just do some research. A major draw this is one of the easiest RC cars I’ve ever worked on. The modular design is 10/10. It’s a sweet set up. But yeah go for 3s or higher. Still easy transition but it’s more steps than are needed.

The only reason to buy the Mega Typhon is if you plan on taking it to 4s or above...That way there is no point paying extra for the 3s versions parts since they will be upgraded for 4s or above parts anyways...If not be patient and save up for the extra 110$ and buy the 3s Typhon instead...Update: After getting a 100$ Hobbywing 3s ESC/Motor combo and .08 mod spur I got it to 56mph on a 17t pinion...Handles it easy and runs much cooler than the brushed system...Update 2: Ok well it gets 5 stars now lol...18t pinion and a few other small upgrades and it hit 74mph
