Excellent read
An excellent read , couldn't put it down once I'd started. Why was that ?The book has a good steady pace that slowly but surely brings all the different threads together and interlocks them. The characters are plausible. Religious extremists, national socialists, banned organisations, gullible individuals, self serving politicians and last but not least some folk with decent morals.Whilst I'm sure society currently has checks and balances in place to stop any group becoming overly powerful (or do we ?) and some would use that to deride the books theme , in this country we have seen elements of those aspects i mention rise to the fore then drop back for whatever reason. Anyone who thinks they're not out there bubbling away should give their head a shake and hope those checks and balances are robust. The storyline wouldn't reflect that if a decent level of research hasn't been undertaken. As I've said in a previous review of one of DC Aldens books , if you approach this as an adventure romp only, you will be disappointed. Allow it to provoke some thought about the content and you'll enjoy it.Personally I'm desperately hoping for a follow up. I want to know what happens to the individuals we left at at various stages of their activities (wont mention specifics that would be a spoiler).

A Great read.
At first I thought this book was an unofficial spin off from the Invasion UK series, there are a couple of similarities. The story is a conspiracy thriller which revolves around a coup in the British Government, Prime Minister Gabriel Bryce is ousted by a power mad colleague while former soldier Danny Whelan is framed for a terrorist atrocity forcing him to go on the run. Both Bryce and Whelan realise they are at the mercy of a power hungry politician who wants to change Britain forever-and not for the better. The story moves at a quick pace and the bad guy gets his comeuppance. Overall, I enjoyed this book, DC Alden is my fave independent writer, never afraid to tackle issues too PC for mainstream publishers. However, on finishing this book, I asked myself; Is this the way we're heading? Recommended for conspiracy thriller fans.

It makes you think
Having read Invasion by the same author, I was looking forward to reading this and I was not at all disappointed. A very thought provoking book, makes you wonder if this could happen. All the scenarios very viable, well written and good story lines on the various fronts. I did not want Tariq getting away with all of this, all steps pre-planned, I won't spoil it though,as you should read it. I would have liked some of the endings of this further written about, I would like to know what is going to happen about the Prime Minister that was. Is another book going to be written to explain how the fightback begins by him or does he just sail off into the sunset??Great read enjoy it, as good as Invasion. Is DC Alden writing another novel please!!

The Story
Very unsatisfactory ending to this novel. In my opinion a novel is a story that ends in a manor that is sensible and finishes for the readers enjoyment. Not halfway into the yarn leaving the reader totally contused as to the end of the novel. If this is the modern way to write a novel I certainty will not be purchasing any more, Most unsatisfactory.

Fantastic book, eagerly awaiting the sequel !
It's rare that I read books as I don't have much time to spare but this one was recommended to me by a friend. From the minute I read the first page I was hooked. The plot instantly pulls you in and emerses you in a reality that's not to far from fiction, each chapter, each storey the way it all comes together when analysed has the potential to happen in our generation. This book made me drop everything and was the first and last object I saw every night for a week. the characters are fascinating and the author creates a film in your mind, I could imagine all the drama, the explosions, everything! I would recommend this book to everyone and can't wait for the sequel!NB

Easy to read fast past thriller
Having got and read Invasion as a Kindle freebie I soon downloaded The Horse at the Gates and am very glad I did. This was an excellent novel, easy to read with good characterisations, which draws you nicely into being able to either hate and want to fail or like and want to succeed (depending on the character). I notice some of the reviews speak of jingoism and racism and whilst the plot is of radically Islamist planning and executing a conspiracy within the UK government to eventually take over I saw this as simple the mechanism for plot and not any specific race or religion bias. In the same way thrillers set in the Cold War are not racist towards Soviet Union they it is simply a vehicle to enable the author to tell a story. I was somewhat disappointed by the ending to novel which was very abrupt and left quite a few of the plot lines hanging (don’t know if this is because there will be a sequel) but it was a bit of a letdown either way. Other that great fun and have already purchased The Angola Deception and am looking forward to Fortress coming out.

Bello
Bel libro con una trama avvincente. Personaggi ben caratterizzati. Niente di noioso e di cerebrale. È una storia che coinvolge si fa leggere di un fiato. Prezzo molto buono.

A prophetic & well written thriller!
This was an excellent terrorism thriller, and very prophetic about the refugee situation currently happening in Europe. It was very well written, and contains plenty of unexpected twists and turns along the way. Here's to hoping D.C. Alden keeps writing new material!

Awesome
I had already read DC Alden's "Invasion" and "The Angola Deception", for that reason I was sure I wouldn't be disappointed by this book. And I was right, definitely.

Interesting Thriller
This suspenseful book kept me interested from start to finish. The book had an exciting beginning, with the author doing an excellent job describing the lead-up to a terrorist attack.I loved the author's description of a dystopian future UK. The book does a great job depicting the disgruntled population of a dark English future. The post-nationalist England that the author portrays is fascinating. I enjoyed how the book only hints at the year in which the book is set, using references to, e.g., the royal family, actors, and sporting events like major soccer games. The author gives a frightening glimpse of Euro-federalism gone wrong. The author's descriptive abilities are excellent. His imagery is excellent (for example, the attacks, bombings, the psychiatric ward where one of the main characters ends up, and the suicide of the Prime Minister are all vivid). I also liked the author's writing style in general (for example, descriptions like "waves of fatigue pounding the shoreline of his consciousness" impressed me). I also enjoyed many of his references, such as when he compares the Sully character to the angel of death. I particularly enjoyed Bryce's escape from his captors. This is a solid thriller that kept me interested throughout.
